DJIA Down Sharply After Jobs Data; VIX Jumps 3.8%
U.S. stocks opened sharply lower today, after the Labor Department's nonfarm payrolls report for May fell way short of Wall Street's expectations. The economy added just 54,000 jobs last month, according to the data, while consensus estimates were calling for a rise of about 150,000. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate unexpectedly climbed to 9.1%. This marks the weakest payrolls growth since September, and the highest unemployment rate since December.
At last check, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA - 12,132.98) has swallowed a loss of 115.6 points, or 0.9%, with all of its 30 components trading lower. The S&P 500 Index (SPX - 1,300.11) has dropped 12.8 points, or roughly 1%, and the Nasdaq Composite (COMP - 2,748.27) is down 25 points, or 0.9%.
Meanwhile, the CBOE Market Volatility Index (VIX - 18.78) is up 3.8% in morning action. As a result, the "fear index" is poised to collect a third straight daily close above former resistance at its 50-day moving average. However, the VIX's early spike has so far been contained by the round-number 20 region.

Hiring Freeze
The U.S. added 54,000 jobs in May, far fewer than economists had forecasted, while the unemployment rate rose to 9.1% from 9%. The number of workers filing first-time unemployment claims remained above the critical 400,000 level in the week ended May 28.
