FMM says not a party to take over any port
The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) today said that it is not a party to take over any port.
Responding to a news report yesterday and today which said that the
Penang Chinese Chambers of Commerce (PCCC) intended to take over the
Penang Port through a consortium including FMM, the FMM said that it
was not part of FMM's core business to invest in ports.
In the report, which appeared in several newspapers, the President
of PCCC, Tan Sri Tan Kok Ping was quoted to have said that PCCC would
be leading a consortium, comprising the Malay and Indian Chambers
together with the FMM to put forward a proposal to bid for the takeover
of the Penang Port.
In a statement today, the FMM clarified that while it supported
greater transparency in the disclosure of the merits and demerits of
privatisation as well as the calling of open tenders in the event
privatisation is considered the best option, it was not part of FMM's
core business to invest in ports.-- BERNAMA
