MRT: Employers should help govt bear cost of building MRT system
KUALA LUMPUR: The Budget 2013 could consider imposing new taxes on
certain groups, like employers, to ensure they help the government
shoulder the financial burden of building an efficient transportation
system, says Mass Rapid Transit Corp (MRT Corp).
Its chief executive officer, Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid,
said a good transportation system would benefit employers as well as
industries and these groups could be targeted to help bear some burden
via direct or indirect taxes.
"For the budget, I would like to
see the federal government be treated more fairly. If you look at the
My Rapid Transit project, the real infrastructure, funding and
investments, everything are on its shoulder," he told Bernama at the
MRT Corp's Hari Raya Open House.
Azhar said in some cities, governments imposed transport tax on employers who had over 10 employees.
"They pay 'X' amount of tax on the payroll cost which helps to ease the government's burden," he said. - Bernama
