Europe Stocks Fall Third Day; Carlsberg Misses Estimates
By Sarah Jones & Corinne Gretler - Feb 18, 2013 4:38 PM GMT+0800

European stocks fell for a third day as companies including Carlsberg A/S missed earnings estimates, offsetting global finance chiefs signalling Japan has scope to keep stimulating its stagnant economy. U.S. futures were little changed and Asian shares advanced.
Carlsberg A/S tumbled the most in more than six months as fourth-quarter earnings missed analysts’ forecasts. Natixis SA surged the most since May 2010 amid plans to make a 2 billion- euro ($2.67 billion) exceptional payment to shareholders after selling back stakes in its parent’s banking networks.
The Stoxx Europe 600 Index slipped 0.3 percent to 286.46 at 8:32 a.m. in London. The benchmark measure has still gained 2.4 percent so far this year after U.S. lawmakers reached a New Year budget compromise. Contracts on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index were little changed as U.S. markets are closed for President’s Day today. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index climbed 0.7 percent, led by a surge in Japanese shares.
“There isn’t too much to key off today, with limited corporate reporting or economic data,” Stan Shamu, a market strategist at IG in Melbourne, wrote in an e-mail. “There has been a gentleman-style agreement in place for some time that central banks should not specifically use monetary policy to directly invoke a weaker currency, and despite the bout of aggressive rhetoric it seems that Japan has been given the green light to continue its inadvertent depreciation.”.

Nikkei Gains
The Nikkei 225 Stock Average jumped as much as 2.4 percent after G-20 finance chiefs in Moscow refrained from censuring Japan’s policies that have weakened the yen. Japanese exporters advanced as the currency dropped against all of its 16 major counterparts. A weaker yen boosts their overseas earnings when repatriated back home.
Carlsberg is among some 65 companies on the Stoxx 600 that are scheduled to report earnings this week, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Of those that have reported so far, about 53 percent have topped analysts’ estimates, the data show. About 60 percent have beaten revenue projections.
Carlsberg tumbled 5.2 percent to 571.50 kroner. Fourth quarter earnings advanced to 2.15 billion kroner ($384 million) from 1.83 billion kroner in the same period a year earlier, Carlsberg said. That compares with the 2.28 billion-kroner median estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.
The brewer forecast annual earnings before interest, tax and some one-time items will be about 10 billion kroner. It reported profit on the same basis of 9.8 billion kroner for 2012.

Novozymes Downgraded
Novozymes A/S declined 2.6 percent to 187.10 kroner after UBS AG cut the world’s biggest maker of enzymes used in washing- machine powder to sell from neutral, saying its valuation is too optimistic given its growth targets.
Natixis jumped 19 percent to 3.38 euros after the investment-banking unit of France’s second-largest lender by branches said it will make a payment to shareholders after selling back stakes in its parent’s banking networks.
Natixis plans to sell holdings valued at 12.1 billion euros to French regional lenders Banques Populaires and Caisses d’Epargne, which jointly form its parent, Groupe BPCE.
Kabel Deutschland Holding AG rose 2.5 percent to 70.12 euros. Vodafone Group Plc may approach Germany’s largest cable provider, which has a market value of about 6.1 billion euros ($8.1 billion), regarding a potential takeover bid as early as next week, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Vodafone’s management, which is in favor of pursuing talks, is waiting for Kabel Deutschland’s earnings release, scheduled for Feb. 20, before initiating negotiations, said the person, who asked not to be named because the deliberations are private.
