KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Abdul Farid Alias, in his mid-40s, has been appointed as president and CEO of MALAYAN BANKING BHD [] (Maybank), succeeding Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar.

"We will continue with executing our 2015 plan we have set out for ourselves. That's all I can say for now," said Abdul Farid when asked about his plans for Maybank at a press conference today.

This highly-anticipated announcement came three months after Wahid's sudden and unexpected departure from the baking group as CEO.

Wahid was appointed to the new Cabinet of Datuk Seri Najib Razak in May 2013 to serve as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department after the May 5 general elections.

Abdul Farid was appointed Maybank deputy president and head of global wholesale banking in July 2010, according to Maybank.

Subsequently, he was appointed as non-independent non-executive director of Maybank Asset Management on 21 March 2012.

He was attached to Khazanah Nasional Bhd as director of investments from 2005 to 2008.

According to the bank, he has 20 years of experience in investment banking and capital markets, having served Aseambankers Malaysia Bhd from 1992 to 1994, Schroders from 1994 to 1995, Malaysia International Merchant Bankers Bhd from 1996 to 1997 and JP Morgan from 1997 to 2005.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Pennsylvania State University, University Park U.S.A, and Master in Business Administration, Finance, Denver University, U.S.A.
