KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 7): The ringgit opened higher against the US dollar in early trading today following higher demand for the local unit, dealers said.

As at 9.15 am, the local note was quoted at 3.1720/1750 to a US dollar from 3.1810/1840 against Friday's close.

Demand for Asian currencies, especially the ringgit, picked up on Monday as the greenback was tagged close to its eight-month low following little progress on the US budget standoff.

The ringgit was also traded higher against other major currencies in the early session today.

The local note appreciated against the yen to 3.2654/2702 from 3.2720/2761 on Friday and was higher against the Singapore dollar to 2.5443/5473 from 2.5509/5535 at the end of last week. The local currency strengthened against the British pound to 5.0885/0940 from 5.1233/1294 Friday and advanced against the euro to 4.3022/3075 from 4.3300/3344 last week.
