Gold rises on news of possible U.S. downgrade
Investing.com - Gold futures traded higher during Wednesday’s Asian session on news one of the major credit ratings agencies is mulling a downgrade of the U.S. sovereign debt rating.
On the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold futures for December delivery rose 0.23% to USD1,276.10 per troy ounce in Asian trading Wednesday. The December contract settled lower by 0.27% at USD1,273.20 per ounce on Tuesday.
Gold futures were likely to find support at USD1,215.55 a troy ounce, the low from July 8, and resistance at USD1,289.70, Monday's high.
Gold came under some pressure as optimism grew that U.S. policymakers were inching closer to an agreement that would reopen the government and allow politicians to get back to work in an effort to raise the debt ceiling.
That optimism was short-lived, however, as media reports broke late in Tuesday’s U.S. session that said talks between Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and his counterpart, Republican Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had broke down.
Making matters worse were conflicting reports. Some reported that the talks were ongoing while others said the opposite.
Fitch Ratings, the only of one of the three major credit ratings agencies that still has an AAA rating on the U.S., put U.S. Treasury bonds on Rating Watch Negative. That could be viewed as a sign Fitch is preparing to pare its rating on U.S. sovereign debt.
"The prolonged negotiations over raising the debt ceiling ... risks undermining confidence in the role of the U.S. dollar as the preeminent global reserve currency, by casting doubt over the full faith and credit of the U.S. This `faith' is a key reason why the U.S. 'AAA' rating can tolerate a substantially higher level of public debt than other AAA" bonds," said Fitch in a statement.
Elsewhere, Comex silver for December delivery rose 0.20% to USD21.233 per ounce while copper for December delivery fell 0.10% to USD3.303 an ounce.

Regional markets mostly inched upward cautiously on hopes that the frantic talks in Washington would yield results ahead of the Oct 17 deadline for the US to avert a debt default.
At 12.30pm, the FBM KLCI gained 8.81 points to 1,793.57.
Gainers led losers by 343 to 289, while 285 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 811.19 million shares valued at RM768.22 million.
The top gainers included Petronas Dagangan, Bat, RHB Capital, Public Bank, Genting Plantations, Bright Packaging, P.I.E., TPC and Century.
The actives included Talam, Hubline, Malton, XDL, CLIQ, Sona Petroleum, Sumatec, MBNC and Mexter.
The decliners included United Plantations, Quality Concrete, Dutch Lady, Aeon, Top Glove, Cepco, Sungei Bagan, KLCC, UMW and PCCS.
Affin IB vice president and head of retail research Dr Nazri Khan in a note Wednesday said that going forward, he expects the local market to brace for a higher session riding on USA debt breakthrough and pre-UMNO-election rally.
He said despite the Hari Raya Haji holiday shortened session, the FBM KLCI was likely to track the strong overnight gains in Wall Street and trend higher, retesting the resistance level of 1800 led by Budget-2014-driven-sectors namely construction, finance and technology blue chips.
“On the technical front, the near term bias has turned in favour of the bull camp with immediate support pegged near 1,760 level (50-day moving average) and 1,750 (gap level of 10 September) while resistance spotted near 1800 level (Sept 2013 high), followed by 1,810 (July 2013 high) and 1,826 level (Bursa all time high),” he said.
Elsewhere, Asian stocks marked time on Wednesday with nervous investors cautiously optimistic or just hoping that frantic talks in Washington to avert a U.S. debt default could lead to a deal before the Oct 17 deadline, according to Reuters.
U.S. senate leaders are continuing to negotiate legislation to raise the nation's borrowing authority and provide temporary government funding. Lawmakers said a deal was close, but there were still details to be worked out, it said.
