Market Close KLCI up 0.8% on plantation shares, bucks regional fall
Business & Markets 2013
Written by Chong Jin Hun of theedgemalaysia.com
Tuesday, 19 November 2013 17:16
KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 19): The FBM KLCI bucked a fall in regional markets as plantation shares supported the local equities benchmark. Fund managers said plantation shares could have risen following the recent rise in crude palm oil (CPO) prices.

At 5pm, the KLCI rose 14.77 points or 0.8% to 1,807.16. This came on gains in stocks like IOI Corp Bhd and Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd (KLK).

"The rally is led by plantation stocks," TA Investment Management Bhd chief investment officer Choo Swee Kee told theedgemalaysia.com over telephone today.

Choo however said he is surprised by the gains in plantation shares today.

The fund manager said he wonders "why shares of plantation firms had risen today, but not other days."

CPO futures had earlier this month breached RM2,600 a tonne before trading lower today.

Bloomberg data show that CPO futures for January 2014 delivery were traded at RM2,567 today. Prices have declined from a six-month high of RM2,632 seen on November 1 this year.

This compares to a low of RM2,153 on July 26 this year, the data show.

Today, Bursa Malaysia saw 1.82 billion shares worth RM2.59 billion changed hands. There were 412 gainers versus 386 decliners.

The top gainer was KLK while Caring Pharmacy Group Bhd led decliners.

The most-active stock was Malaysian Airline System Bhd.

Across Asia, Japan's Nikkei fell 0.25%  while Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined 0.01%.  Nearer to home, Singapore's Straits Times dropped 0.33%.
