KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 30): The outflow of foreign funds from Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines appear to be abating, according to MIDF Research.
In its foreign fund flow report Monday, the research house said global funds appear to be nibbling back Asian stocks after selling in November and in the first fortnight of December.
However, MIDF Research said that as volume was still thin, a clear trend could not be ascertained.
It said that based on aggregate data from seven proxy Asian markets that it tracks (Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and India), foreign funds bought on a net basis, a marginal US$90 million of stocks in the aforementioned markets.
MIDF Research said money was slowly flowing back to Korea after some heavy selling in the first two weeks of this month.
It said the flow of funds to Taiwan had also been steady in the last few weeks.
The research house said the biggest Emerging Asia beneficiary of global portfolio fund this year was unmistakably India.
It said a total of US$19.9 billion of global fund entered Indian equity this year, adding that the attractiveness of Indian equity could be partly attributable to the fall in the rupee.
“Foreign funds’ exit from Emerging S.E.A markets continued last week. Indonesia reported a heavy outflow of US$384 million, the highest since August, but we will not be surprised if the numbers are revised.
“The outflow from Thailand, Philippines and Malaysia appear to be abating,” it said.
