KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 24): The FBM KLCI was pulled down by plantation blue chips led by Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd (KLK), apart from the disappointing Chinese manufacturing data.

At the 5.00 pm market close, the benchmark index fell 5.74 points or 0.3% to 1,802.57 points.

Top loser, KLK, saw some 1.1 million shares traded. It closed at RM23.74 after declining RM1.08 or 4%.

Danny Wong, CEO of Areca Capital, said the KLCI continued to remain in negative territory due to the disappointing Chinese manufacturing data that raised concerns over the economy.

“The KLCI fell largely due to the poor Chinese figures which accelerated selling pressure in the market. This suggests the Chinese economy may not be as robust as it seems to be,” said Wong.

“Palm oil stocks such as KLK may have been affected, as China, apart from India, is an important export market for palm oil.”

Meanwhile, Kenanga Research in a note today said the KLCI is likely to continue consolidating pending confirmed upside breakout.

The research house said the local benchmark must rise above the 1,826 immediate resistance level in order to reverse the current downtrend.

Across Bursa Malaysia, 1.6 billion shares worth RM2.1 billion were traded. Losers overwhelmed gainers by 452 versus 294, while 329 counters remained unchanged.

The top gainer was Shangri-La Hotels (M) Bhd while Iris Corporation Bhd was the most active counter.

Reuters reported Asian shares lurched to a 4-1/2 month low at noon today, extending the previous day's weakness as disappointing Chinese manufacturing data raised concerns over the economy, and emerging and commodity currencies took a beating.

Investors sought safety in gold, the yen and highly-rated government bonds, sending the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield to a seven-week low.

"Sentiment was already poor because of the poor U.S. jobs data released early this month, and it was exacerbated by the Chinese figures," said Naoki Kamiyama, head of Japan equity strategy at Bank Of America Merrill Lynch in Tokyo.

Across the region, Japan’s Nikkei 225 was down 1.94%, South Korea’s Kospi fell 0.36% and Singapore’s Straits Times Index closed 0.83% lower.

In China, the Shanghai Composite Index ended 0.60% higher, but Hong Kong’s Hang Seng closed 1.25% lower.

Zhulian cb was very difficult to handle. I hope to make some profit next round.
