LONDON: European shares edged up yesterday, with miners rising after encouraging Chinese data, and Italian banks recovering some of the ground lost in recent days, when worries over the eurozone debt crisis escalated.

At 1101 GMT, the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was up 0.1 per cent at 1,092.83. The index had lost nearly 3 per cent over the past three sessions.

London's FTSE 100 index was showing a mid-day gain of 0.33 per cent to 5,888.51 points. Frankfurt's DAX 30 gained 0.60 per cent to 7,217.82 and in Paris the CAC 40 won 0.26 per cent to 3,783.75.

The Milan exchange rallied 2.01 per cent, and Madrid jumped 0.92 per cent after suffering major losses the previous day.

"It's hard to see an immediate catalyst that might drive things forward, to get markets moving back up again," said Mark Webster, head of European active equities at State Street here. - Agencies
