Happy birthday, have you renewed your licence?
KUALA LUMPUR: Birth dates may be used as expiry dates to make it easier for drivers to renew their driving licences on time.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said feedback would be sought from the public first.
He said many motorists caught with expired licences often gave the excuse that they had forgotten to renew them.
If this proposal gets the go-ahead, drivers will be allowed to renew their licences for free if the expiry date is less than six months from their birth date. They will pay RM15 if the expiry date is more than six months from the birth date.
Currently, drivers pay RM30 annually to renew their licences.
Kong also refuted a report by the Malaysian Automotive Association that vehicle sales had dropped 1.3 per cent during the first half of this year. He said vehicle sales for this period had actually seen an increase of 5.25 per cent.
He said 614,775 vehicles were registered between January and June, compared with 584,088 for the same period last year.
Private cars saw the most sales (296,383), followed by motorcycles (281,517), goods vehicles (19,544), others (10,938), taxis (2,844), rental cars (2,174) and buses (1,375)
