More sideways trading pattern


Outlook: Equities around the globe, including Bursa Malaysia took a rollar-coaster ride the past week, as investors grappled with the economic impact of Japan's massive earthquake and tsunami and unfolding crises at quake-sticken nuclear reactors.
Unlike certain major markets, there was no evidence of panic liquidation on the home front and as such, Bursa has avoided a breakdown.
However, we are still vulnerable to external uncertainty. While Japan's nuclear crisis is still unresolved, we have geopolitical turmoil in the oil-rich Middle East and North Africa. Adding the two together would surely put many people on edge, prompting us to believe that the local bourse is likely to tread cautiously until a clearer picture emerges.
Technically, indicators are pretty unclear, implying sideways trading pattern may be extended this week. A crack below the 1,474-point base will see the lower support floor of 1,446 points, also the 200-day simple moving average, becoming much weaker.
As for the upside, a successful penetration of the 1,530 points barrier may lead to a re-test of the all-time peak of 1,576.95
