DRB-Hicom in Volkswagen charm offensive
DRB-Hicom Bhd, the country’s biggest automotive company by sales, is understood to have hosted two Volkswagen AG group directors last Thursday. Business Times understands that the two met key stakeholders of DRB-HICOM, including its top management. “They also reviewed all Proton Holdings Bhd’s models,” said a source. It is understood that the Volkswagen directors were here to evaluate the possibility of having a collaborative technical agreement on technology transfer with Proton. (Source: Business Times)
Bank Negara announces new liberalisation rules
Bank Negara has announced a slew of liberalisation measures regarding the use and conversion of foreign exchange, in line with its efforts to enhance competitiveness and develop the domestic financial markets. Under the new ruling, which comes into effect from today, licensed onshore banks are allowed to trade foreign currency against another foreign currency with a resident. This means a resident is allowed to buy and sell foreign currency against another foreign currency for any purpose, including for trading, although such transactions shall only be undertaken with a licensed onshore bank. However, the liberalisation is only for transactions involving foreign currency against another foreign currency for any purpose and does not include the trading of foreign currency against the ringgit. IJM Corp to raise stake in Keuro?
The potentially huge contract spin-off from the RM7.07billion West Coast Expressway (WCE) project has spearheaded IJM Corp Bhd into the spotlight. But not to be forgotten is Kumpulan Europlus Bhd (Keuro), which could see more corporate exercises. “For a bigger exposure to the WCE concession, IJM Corp is likely to increase its stake in Keuro, which is now only 22.72%. It may not want to privatize Keuro, but certainly it may want to have bigger shareholdings in the company,” said a market obsever. (Source: The Edge)

Asian Stocks Advance on Greek Debt Deal Talks
By Jonathan Burgos - Jan 31, 2012 9:34 AM GMT+0800
Asian stocks advanced, reversing earlier losses, after Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos said major progress has been made in debt-swap talks with bondholders and Japan’s industrial production grew faster than economists estimated.
Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc., Japan’s second- largest lender by market value, rose 2.3 after saying it will meet its full-year profit forecast. Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., a South Korean shipbuilder, gained 4.9 percent after winning a $556 million contract to supply tankers to Kuwait Oil Tanker Co. Canon Inc., the world’s biggest camera maker, sank 4.1 percent after its president resigned amid forecasts for slowing net income growth to miss estimates.
The MSCI Asia Pacific Index (MXAP) added 0.5 percent to 122.65 as of 10:31 a.m. in Tokyo, having swung between gains and losses at least eight times. The measure has risen 7.8 this month, the the past six weeks, set for the biggest such advance since September 2010.
“We’ve seen some positive signs in Europe,” said Angus Gluskie, who oversees about $300 million as managing director at White Funds Management in Sydney. “We’re on a cusp of a Greek bond restructuring. They will agree on it but there will be some debate in the meantime.”
The Asia-Pacific gauge has risen for six weeks, the longest streak since a seven-week stretch that ended Oct. 15, 2010, amid bets China will ease lending curb, the U.S. economy is improving and Europe is containing its debts crisis.
