Market Thoughts

US stocks recovered from early losses to finish higher last night, helped by some better-than-expected economic news and as investors seemed to shrug off a handful of disappointing earnings. Thanks to the rally, all three major indexes are now in positive territory for the week. However, European shares closed down after the European Commission issued a report saying the euro zone was heading into its second recession in just three years.

Given the mixed performance, we expect the local market to remain uncertain with a negative bias. The FBM KLCI fell 3.86 points to 1,556.66 points yesterday. For the downside, the index's immediate support is at 1530 points.

Gas Malaysia, Petronas sign new agreement
Gas Malaysia Bhd signed a new agreement with Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) to supply an equivalent of 492 million standard cubic feet per day (MMScfd) of natural gas. The 10-year contract will start from January 1 2013, with the option to extend for another five years. The new deal will replace the existing agreement for a total gas supply of 382 MMScfd, which will expire on December 31 this year. The contract is aimed at providing a long-term supply security of natural gas to Gas Malaysia's existing customers, the company said in a statement. (Source: Business Times)

Alstom-led group bags RM5b Malakoff deal
Malakoff Corp Bhd has awarded a RM5 billion contract to build a power station in Johor to a consortium led by Alstom Power Systems SA. The consortium will help Malakoff build a new 1,000 megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant, adjacent to its existing facilities at Tanjung Bin. Malakoff's wholly-owned Tanjung Bin Energy Issuer Bhd (TBEI) yesterday signed the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with the consortium yesterday. Tan quits as Berjaya Corp chairman, to keep key stake
Tan Sri Vincent Tan, one of the country’s most prominent tycoons, has quit as chairman of Berjaya Corp Bhd (BCorp), which he founded in the 1980s. Tan, who turned 60 yesterday, will remain as BCorp’s controlling shareholder. In the interim and with immediate effect, his eldest son, Datuk Robin Tan, will concurrently hold the position of chairman and chief executive officer (CEO). Maybank turns in record performance
Top lender Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) posted a 20 per cent increase in net profit for the last financial year comprising just six months and announced a better-than-expected final dividend. It was a shorter financial year as the group changed its year-end to December 31 from June 30. Net profit for the six months to December 31 last year came in at RM2.6 billion compared with RM2.1 billion in the same period a year ago. Revenue grew by 21.6 per cent to RM12.9 billion. “Our record performance is a result of our efforts in focusing on fundamentals and ensuring that we grow our business profitably and responsibly. We expect to see reasonable business growth in 2012,” president and chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar told reporters at a results briefing. (Source: Business Times)

Kenanga, ECM unit close to finalizing deal
ECM Libra Financial Group Bhd, whose substantial shareholders have long wanted to divest their equity, is close to signing an agreement to sell the group’s stockbroking and investment banking operation to K&N Kenanga Holdings Bhd, according to sources. Sources close to the negotiations told The Edge that Kenanga Holdings will pay about RM900 million for the stockbroking and investment banking business in ECM Libra via a cash and share swap deal. Upon completion, ECM Libra will hold a stake in Kenanga Holdings. The financial group will be left with its asset management business and cash.
