Re: 7th March 2012 Wednesday
Market Thoughts
US stocks closed sharply lower last night, with the Dow posting its first triple-digit decline in 2012, fueled by fears over a Greek default and amid economic growth concerns. Similarly, European markets extended losses on rumors, later denied by Athens, that Greece would have to push back Thursday's deadline for agreeing a debt swap with private creditors, and avert a default that would endanger debt-laden Italy and Spain.
The FBM KLCI recently rallied but failed to break its resistance and all-time high of 1597 points. The bearish sentiment on Greece would overspill into the local market and the KLCI's immediate support is seen at 1530 points.

U.S. Treasuries and the yen gained. The S&P 500 slid 1.5 percent, the most since Dec. 8, to 1,343.36 at 4 p.m. in New York, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled 203.66 points to 12,759.15. Gold, silver and copper futures lost at least 1.9 percent. The yen gained versus all 16 major peers and 10-year Treasury note yields fell six basis points to 1.95 percent.
Asian Central Banks May Be Nearing End of Interest-Rate Cuts on Oil Risk
Central banks in Asia will probably hold off on adding monetary stimulus this week as higher oil prices combine with diminishing concern of a euro-region meltdown to make the case for preserving firepower. South Korea and New Zealand will hold interest rates when the decisions are announced tomorrow, according to all economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. Indonesia will keep its key rate unchanged at 5.75 percent the same
day after an unexpected reduction last month, 15 of 16 economists told Bloomberg, while Malaysia will maintain borrowing costs for a fifth meeting a day later.
Euro Declines to a Two-Week Low as Region’s Economy Shrinks; Aussie Falls
The euro declined to a two-week low versus the dollar after a report showed the region’s economy contracted last quarter, adding to signs the European debt crisis is hampering global growth. Australia’s dollar weakened to almost a six-week low against the dollar as Reserve Bank Deputy Governor Philip Lowe said the nation must be
alert that the currency may be too strong. The yen gained for a fifth day against the 17-nation currency as more than 20 percent of Greece’s private creditors have agreed to debt restructuring. Norway’s krone and Canada’s dollar slumped as oil prices declined to a two-week low as the European Union offered to restart talks
with Iran.
ECB Balance Sheet Is 30% Bigger Than Germany’s Economy After Lending Boom
The European Central Bank’s balance sheet surged to a record 3.02 trillion euros ($3.96 trillion) last week, 31 percent bigger than the German economy, after a second tranche of three-year loans. Lending to euro-area banks jumped 310.7 billion euros to 1.13 trillion euros in the week ended March 2, the Frankfurt- based ECB said in a statement today. The balance sheet gained 330.6 billion euros in the week. It is now more than a third bigger than the U.S. Federal Reserve’s $2.9 trillion and eclipses the 2.3 trillion-euro gross domestic product of Germany, the world’s fourth largest economy.
