Market Thoughts

US stocks ended near session highs Tuesday, with all three major averages logging their best rally in a month, helped by a handful of positive earnings reports and as fears over Europe diminished. Similarly, European shares closed higher on Tuesday, led by banks after a well-received Spanish debt auction, an upbeat German economic sentiment reading and positive U.S. corporate earnings releases.

On the local market, the FBM KLCI shed 1.32 points to 1596.19. Following the bullish performance in the US and European markets, we expect the KLCI to be positive today. The index could re-test its recent record high of 1604 points.

CIMB aims to ink deal to buy 60pc of BOC soon
The group has been in talks with the Philippine bank’s major shareholder since October 2011 CIMB Group Holdings Bhd expects to ink a deal to buy up to 60 per cent in the Philippines' Bank of Commerce (BOC) "soon", its chief said. (Source: Business Times)

Nine in new passport deal race
Two companies, Iris Corp Bhd and Dibena/Datasonic Corp are said to be the front-runners for the job to replace the identification pages (ID) on the Malaysian passport from paper to polycarbonate. The contract value for just the two ID pages is expected to be about RM330mil for a five-year period. Sources claim that over two million passports will be issued over the next five years from the 56 domestic and five overseas centres where the passports are issued. (Source: The Star)

APM gets nod for unit in Indonesia
The Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board has approved APM Automotive Holdings Bhd’s intention to establish APM Auto Components Indonesia (PTAPMACI) on Feb 22, and the said entity has been duly established and granted its legal status. Ingens confirms bagging RM125mil job
Ingenuity Solutions Bhd (Ingens) has obtained a RM125mil contract to be the sole distributor of WiMAX modems for broadband player Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd (P1). Wijaya in talks to start logging
Wijaya Baru Global Bhd said that it was negotiating with interested parties to start timber extraction and thereafter plant oil palm in the Papua Province in Indonesia. “However, the talks are in the preliminary stage and nothing has been finalised yet,” the company said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia in response to a recent news report entitled “Sarawak tycoon tightening grip on Wijaya”.
