Market Thoughts
Stocks recovered more than half their losses, but still closed in negative territory Tuesday as political uncertainty in Greece kept investors on edge. The Dow Jones Industrial Average recovered from a 198-point plunge but still logged a five-day losing streak, slumping 76.44 points, or 0.59 percent, to close at 12,932.09.

Meanwhile, European shares closed lower on mounting concern about the euro zone debt crisis as question marks were raised about Greece's commitment to its bailout pledges. The Athens General Index hit new lows on Tuesday not seen since 1992, after a 7 percent fall on Monday.

On the local market, the FBM KLCI Rose 5.73 points to 1590.60 points yesterday. Given the bearish market in the US and Europe, we expect the KLCI to be negative today.


Malaysia News & Highlights
CIMB to buy 60% stake in BoC for RM881mil
CIMB Group Holdings Bhd has entered into conditional share purchase agreements with San Miguel Properties Inc, San Miguel Corp Retirement Plan and minority shareholders to buy a 59.98% stake in Manila-based Bank of Commerce (BoC) for RM881mil or 181.25 pesos (RM13.13) a share. The deal, expected to be completed by the end of the third quarter, values BoC at a price to book of 1.14 times as at Dec 31, 2011 but upon full alignment with CIMB’s accounting and provisioning policies, the effective price to book would be about 1.30 times. Ageing oil palm plantations likely to lift CPO price
Anticipation over declining crude palm oil (CPO) production due to ageing plantations in major producing countries including Malaysia, would likely bolster the commodity to hit RM4,000 per tonne by second half of this year, according to industry players. Malaysian Estate Owners Association president Boon Weng Siew who pegged the country's total planted area with palm trees of over 20 years old to between 30% and 40%, said many of the ageing palm trees in Malaysia were mostly under the smallholders' holdings. Hartalega profit rises on higher revenue
Hartalega Holdings Bhd’s full-year net profit for the financial year ended March 31, rose by 6% to RM201.62mil from RM190.3mil a year earlier. Yearly revenues rose 26.7% to RM931.08mil from RM734.92mil previously. The company’s fourth-quarter net profit was slightly lower at RM50.01mil from RM52.4mil in the previous corresponding period, on higher revenue, which rose to RM240.22mil from RM192.52mil previously. Hartalega’s board of directors declared an interim dividend of 6 sen per share which would go ex on May 23 and would be paid on June 13. (Source: The Star)

Comment: Hartalega’s full year FY12 results came within our expectation, with the net earnings meeting 96% of our forecast. However, the net margin in 4QFY12 declined c.6.4ppts to 20.8% from 27.2% in 4QFY11, indicating the challenge it faced in the increasingly competitive nitrile glove market. We expect the margin to fall further, slightly below the 20% level in coming quarters, which is in line with the management guidance. No change to our FY13-14 earnings estimate. We maintain our HOLD call with a Target Price of RM 7.48 and RM3.56 (ex-bonus issue). We continue to like its status being the largest nitrile glove producer in the world and its highly automated production lines.

Permanis to supply beverages to Revenue Valley
Permanis Sdn Bhd, one of the biggest beverage producers in the country, signed an exclusive multi-million dollar agreement to supply beverages to Revenue Valley Sdn Bhd, which owns and operates food outlets Manhattan Fish Market, Tony Roma's and Popeyes. The exclusive deal, which is for a period of five years, will see Permanis, the official bottler of PepsiCo in Malaysia, supplying Pepsi, 7Up, Mirinda, Mountain Dew, Lipton, Revive, Tropicana Twister and Bleu mineral water to all 18 Manhattan Fish Market outlets, six Tony Roma's outlets and five Popeyes outlets in the country. Bank Islam revisits plan for Muamalat stake
Bank Islam is revisiting plans for a potential acquisition of a stake in PT Bank Muamalat in Indonesia, according to its parent company. "We are still collecting data and nothing is concrete yet. "We like Indonesia because the market is quite robust, and we strongly believe it has strong market penetration because they (Indonesia) already have their infrastructure ready, compared to China," BIMB Holdings Bhd group managing director and chief executive officer Johan Abdullah said after the group's annual general meeting yesterday. Perisai Petroleum Teknologi Bhd has secured a contract from Sembcorp Marine’s subsidiary to build a drilling rig costing US$208mil (RM635.86mil). U.S. Stocks, Commodities Fall as Euro Extends Slump on Greece
Stocks and commodities slid, while the euro extended its longest slump since 2008, as concern that new Greek political leaders will back out of bailout agreements sent the nation’s benchmark equity index to an almost 20-year low. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index slipped 0.4 percent to close at 1,363.72 at 4 p.m. in New York. Speculation that Greece’s new government will reject terms of its financial rescue grew as New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras said he failed to form a coalition following the weekend elections, passing the opportunity to Alexis Tsipras’s Syriza party.

Oil Trades Near Three-Month Low as Report Shows Rising Supplies
Oil traded near the lowest level in three months in New York after a report showed stockpiles climbed the most since March in the U.S., the world’s biggest crude consumer. Futures were little changed after dropping for a fifth day yesterday. U.S. supplies increased 7.8 million barrels last week to 378 million, the highest level since August 1990, figures from the American Petroleum Institute showed after the settlement. Oil’s decline stalled after it fell below its 200-day moving average.

Moody’s Bank Downgrades Risk Choking European Recovery
Moody’s Investors Service will this month start cutting the credit ratings of more than 100 banks, a move that risks pushing up their funding costs and forcing them to curb lending in a threat to economic growth. The cuts, which would follow downgrades by Standard & Poor’s and Fitch Ratings last year, could erode profits, trigger margin calls and leave some firms unable to borrow from money- market funds that have strict rules on who they can lend to. Without access to funding from private sources, banks have had to sell assets and reduce lending.

Australian Dollar Weakens on Greece; Yields Drop to Record Low
Australia’s dollar weakened and bond yields fell to a record as concern mounted that Greek leaders will be unable to form a coalition government, reducing appetite for riskier assets. The Australian currency slid against all major peers as bets increased that a left-leaning coalition in Greece may undo bailout accords. The so-called Aussie is 0.1 percent from this year’s low versus the dollar after the Australian budget indicated an end to four years of deficits.

Results Preview
Tan Chong (TCM) is scheduled to report 1Q12 results on 17 May that we expect will be relatively unexciting. Combined Nissan and Renault vehicle sales during 1Q12 of 8,074 units improved 14.4% qoq but remains 15.0% down yoy.

Malaysia’s plans for a storage hub for crude oil and petroleum products are relatively recent. However, on completion in 2017, the two ongoing projects in Johor, Dialog/Royal Vopak’s Pengerang Independent Terminals (PIT) and MISC/Vitol’s ATB Terminal as well as other existing tank terminals will result in a combined storage capacity of 8.1m m3, which would be a close second to Singapore ’s estimated 9.5m m3.
