Market Thoughts
US stocks closed lower in thin trading Friday as investors hesitated to
stay long over the three-day Memorial Day holiday weekend amid ongoing
worries over the euro zone. Still, all three major indexes posted their
best weekly gains for the month, snapping a three-week losing streak.
Meanwhile, European markets were flat as relentless worries over a
possible Greek exit from the euro zone checked European stock markets
and traders said markets would remain volatile over the coming month.
On the local market, the FBM KLCI added 2.87 points to 1551.12
points as the market consolidate after the recent selldown. Given the
uncertainty in Europe, we expect the index to hover at current levels.

TNB set to save RM1.2b in PPA payments
Tenaga Nasional Bhd is expected to register around RM1.2 billion, or 46
per cent, in cost savings on the capacity payments it makes under the
first-generation power purchase agreements (PPAs), which will expire in
two to three years. “TNB’s capacity costs owed to the independent power
producers (IPPs) are around RM7 billion per annum. Thus, the cost
savings from the renegotiated or re-tender of the first-generation
capacity charge is around RM1.2 billion,” said a report. (Source:

Banking group Affin Holdings Bhd reported better-than-expected first

at least half of its net profit each year. Such payouts would be made
provided they are not "detrimental to the company's cash requirement or
any plans approved by the board", it said in a stock exchange filing.

Foreign News
U.S. Stocks Rise to End S&P 500’s 3-Week Losing Streak
U.S. stocks rose, giving the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index its first
weekly rally since April, as investors were lured by the cheapest
valuations since November. The S&P 500 climbed 1.7 percent to
1,317.82, extending its 2012 gain to 4.8 percent. The Dow Jones
Industrial Average added 85.45 points, or 0.7 percent, to 12,454.83,
rebounding from the lowest level since January.
Consumer Sentiment in U.S. Climbs to Highest Since 2007
Consumer confidence rose in May to the highest level since October 2007
as Americans became more upbeat about the prospects for employment. The
Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan final index of sentiment climbed
to 79.3, the ninth straight increase, from 76.4 the prior month. The
gauge was projected to hold at the preliminary reading of 77.8,
according to the median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg
News.
Bankia Group to Seek EU19 Billion From Government to Restructure
The Bankia group, a Spanish lender nationalized earlier this month,
will seek 19 billion euros ($23.8 billion) of government funds as it
provisions against real estate and non-property loans. The group will
ask the state’s bank rescue fund to provide the money by buying shares
in its parent company, Banco Financiero y de Ahorros, it said in a
filing to regulators. The group needs a further 4 billion euros to
cover real estate on top of provisions already ordered by the
government, and 5.5 billion euros for the rest of its loan book, it
said.
Euro Declines Most in 2012 on Deepening Turmoil in Spain
The euro had its biggest weekly loss since December against the dollar
as Greece’s anti-bailout party gained in the polls and amid a deepening
crisis in Spain. The shared currency fell for a fifth week versus the
yen, the longest stretch since October, as German manufacturing shrank
and the Bank of Japan refrained from adding stimulus to the economy.
Asian Currencies Drop a Fourth Week as EU Crisis Hurts Exports
Asian currencies fell for a fourth week, the longest stretch of losses
this year, on speculation Europe’s debt crisis will stall the global
economic recovery and hurt demand for the region’s exports. Official
reports this week showed China’s manufacturing probably contracted for
a seventh month in May, Taiwan’s overseas shipments and factory output
declined, and Malaysia grew at the slowest pace last quarter since
June. India’s rupee reached a record low even after the central bank
took measures to boost dollar supply to alleviate pressure on the
currency.
Vietnam Cuts Rates a Third Time as Inflation Hits 21-Month Low
Vietnam cut interest rates for the third straight month as policy
makers stepped up efforts to bolster a struggling economy after
inflation eased to the lowest since 2010. The State Bank of Vietnam’s
refinancing rate will fall to 12 percent from 13 percent effective May
28, according to a statement on the central bank’s website yesterday.
The discount rate will be cut to 10 percent from 11 percent and deposit
rate cap will be lowered to 11 percent from 12 percent, it said.

Affin Holdings - A generous dividend policy
Target RM2.82 (Long Term: Under Perform)
A
couple of non-recurring items pushed Affin's 1Q12 net profit up 56.5%
yoy and 4.3% past our forecast though only 1.1% above consensus
numbers. Another positive surprise was the announcement of a 50%
dividend payout policy. We up FY12 EPS for the one-off items while
raising DPS for a rise in the payout from 25-30% to 50%. This raises
our target price (10% discount to DDM value; COE of 13.2%; LT DPS
growth of 4%). Despite the attractive dividend yield, the stock remains
an Underperform, given our cautious stance on the earnings prospects,
due to the suppressed margins.
