Made in Malaysia pen drives for Asian market

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Pen drive inventor Pua Khein-Seng has invested
USD$2mil (RM6.28mil) in a local contract manufacturing company to
produce pen drives for the Asian market.
The 38-year-old Malaysian technopreneur, who is chairman and chief executive officer of Taiwan-listed Phison Electronics Corp, has formed a smart partnership with Hotayi Electronic (M) Sdn Bhd, which he is also a shareholder.
“We will conduct a test run to manufacture the pen drives in this facility next month before starting production by July.
“Although
Phison pen drives are available worldwide, these would be the first to
be technically Made in Malaysia', and so I hope Malaysians will give us
their support as well,” he said after Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng visited Hotayi Electronic in the Bukit Tengah Industrial Park here yesterday.
Pua
said Hotayi Electronic, which was established in 1992, had vast
experience in integrated manufacturing, besides specialising in
contract electronics manufacturing services.
He planned to shift some of his pen drive orders from his Taiwan plant to Hotayi .
Pua
said the pen drives out of Hotayi, would initially be marketed in
Malaysia and other Asian countries, before being exported to Europe and
the Middle East.
Lim said he welcomed Pua's decision to produce
pen drives out of Penang, in addition to Phison's earlier commitment to
set up a flash memory chip design and development centre in Penang.
“We
also appreciate Hotayi's investment of US$30mil (RM94.2mil) over the
last 20 years and we are impressed by its progress thus far.”
