Likely To Fall; Tariff Hike To Hurt Sentiment

0049 GMT [Dow Jones] The KLCI is likely to open lower,
extending Monday's losses on worries the government's decision to hike gas and
power tariffs will raise inflation and hurt consumer spending, a local dealer
says. "The sentiment was anyway turning negative after recent gains in the
index. The power tariff hike is going to turn investors even more cautious," the
dealer says. He tips immediate support at 1538.76 based on the 10-day simple
moving average, with the next support tipped at its recent low of 1525.71. KLCI
ended 0.4% lower at 1542.84 Monday. The government said Monday during market
hours that the increase in global energy prices had made its subsidy burden
"unsustainable." Tenaga Nasional (5347.KU) may rise despite saying its planned
average tariff hike of 7.12% from June 1 wouldn't be enough to cover rising
costs as the company has been seeking the increase for some time. Consumer
stocks such as British American Tobacco Malaysia (4162.KU) and Nestle Malaysia
(4707.KU) are likely to come under selling pressure as the tariff hike is
expected to hurt consumer spending.(ankur.relia@dowjones.com)
