MELBOURNE: Malaysian-born Vicky Teoh, with an estimated wealth of A$390 million (RM1.2 billion), tops Australia’s Rich Women’s List, published by the Business Review Weekly (BRW) yesterday.

Vicky went to Australia with her husband David Teoh in 1986 and founded TPG Telecom, a computer equipment business.

Describing Vicky as “mysterious” and “low-profile”, BRW said the Teohs have built a A$2 billion Internet business in less than 20 years.

It is believed Vicky did not supply a photograph to BRW, unlike most of the other listed women.

The weekly said Vicky had just completed a stellar 12-month stint, increasing the value of her 18% stake in TPG by A$125 million to A$380 million.

David is chief executive of TPG. Their son Shane joined the TPG board last year. The company is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.

Vicky also has a stake in online prescription glasses retailer Oscar Wylee.

To be eligible for this list, candidates must be female Australian citizens and must have been involved in the creation of their personal fortune.

It excludes anyone who started with an inheritance from the previous generation.

For this reason, the world’s richest woman, mining billionaire Gina Rinehart, is not on the list.

Australia’s second richest woman is Rhonda Wyllie with an estimated A$346 million, earned through her work in the family property business, Wyllie Group, of which she is a non-executive director. — Bernama
