KUALA LUMPUR: MALAYAN BANKING BHD [] (Maybank) will continue to seek potential talents from its “Maybank Go Ahead Challenge" programme to fill gaps in its businesses due to a lack of banking talent in the market.

"It's probably the lack of availability in the types of talents that we are looking for, which are needed for different purposes," Maybank group human capital head Nora Abdul Manaf said after its national qualifier ceremony yesterday.

She added that the “Maybank Go Ahead Challenge" would give Maybank a wider range of potential employees as the programme extracts talents from 10 countries globally.

Nora said the programme was designed to search for thinkers and courageous individuals with innovative skills, adding that this would create a talent pool of world-class future business leaders and competent financial experts for Maybank within the region.

The programme, a multi-disciplinary business talent competition open to recent graduates and final year university students, is now in its second year and will employ the winners as its entry level executives.

"We believe that there are different types of talents required. For operational jobs, talents can be taken from a different source," said Nora.

She noted that there are several programmes conducted by Maybank to develop talents, as it believes that different sources are needed to fill in different job scopes.

"We believe that this competition will provide a platform to identify talent in this region, contributing towards the needs of the country and region and more importantly, help sustain the bank's future growth," said Nora.

Yesterday, the programme short-listed the top 50 talents from 2,700 applicants from across Malaysia.

The competition saw over 5,000 applicants from countries where Maybank has presence. This includes talents from Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Cambodia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, China and the UK.

Of the 50 individuals, the best performing 16 candidates will enter the grand finale next month where they will face competition from around the globe in competing for a prize fund of US$72,000 (RM228,240) and to join the Maybank Global
Apprentice Programme.

The Maybank Global Apprentice Programme is an exclusive two-year holistic learning programme aimed at creating the future generation of leaders in the industry.

It is designed to accelerate its participants into managerial roles, and offers apprentices a breadth of experience across Maybank's network and operations in different markets and departments.

According to its website, Maybank has operations in 20 countries with over 47,000 employees. Last year, the group posted its record profit of RM5.74 billion.
