Mid-morning Market KLCI rises 0.39% as investors accumulate on weakness

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 23): The FBM KLCI rose 0.39% at mid-morning, lifted by gains including at Maybank and Public Bank as investors accumulated battered stocks in tandem with improving sentiment at most regional markets.
At 10.01am, the FBM KLCI added 6.80 points to 1,727.17.
Gainers led losers by 363 to 103, while 201 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 387.97 million shares valued at RM322.34 million.
The top gainers included GAB, Maybank, Deleum, Takaful, Pintaras, Hup Seng, Datasonic, Panasonic, Public Bank and Wing Tai Malaysia.
MAS was the most actively traded counter with 54.43 million shares done. The stock added one sen to 33.5 sen.
The other actives included TMS, Sumatec, MQ Tech, Pesona, YTL, Tiger Synergy and Flonic.
The losers included BAT, Bernas, Tan Chong, MAHB, KLK, Hong Leong Bank, PPB, Petronas Gas, Guan Chong and Aeon Credit.
CIMB Research has maintained its end end-2013 KLCI target of 1,850 points and said that although Malaysia faces several macro headwinds that need to be addressed, the research house was are still Positive on Malaysia in the longer term and view the stock market's sell-off this week as an opportunity to accumulate positions on weakness.
In a strategy note Friday, CIMB Research said regional markets had come under selling pressure this week and Malaysia had not been spared.
“We maintain our end-2013 KLCI target of 1,850 points,” it said.
CIMB Research said that the selling this week has been excessive and that it is a good time for investors to bottom-fish.
“Our preferred sectors remain the ETP winner, that is oil and gas, CONSTRUCTION [] and property,” it said.
Asian shares rose in early trading on Friday after economic data suggested the global economy is expanding, which took the edge off persistent fears of the U.S. Federal Reserve's likely withdrawal of stimulus, according to Reuters.
MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan added 0.2 percent, moving away from a six-week low touched on Thursday. Japan's Nikkei stock average gained 2.0 percent, it said.
