KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 11): The FBM KLCI rose 0.6% in early trade on Friday in line with the overnight gains at Wall Street on fresh hopes of a quick end to the US budget and debt ceiling stalemate.
At 9.10am, the FBM KLCI rose 10.86 points to 1,786.78, lifted by gains including at Petronas-linked stocks, CIMB, Sime Darby and Genting.
Gainers led losers by 292 to 30, while 120 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 231.91 million shares valued at RM88.61 million.
The top gainers included Quality Concrete, Petronas Dagangan, BAT, Petronas Gas, KLK, CIMB, Sime Darby, Genting and HLFG.
Hwang DBS Vickers Research in a market preview Friday said that driven by hopes of a breakthrough in talks by the US lawmakers to resolve the debt limit, major stock indices on Wall Street jumped between 2.2% and 2.3% last night.
The initial joy, nevertheless, might be tempered by a subsequent drop on the futures market, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average December contract hovering at a 110-point discount to the spot rate this morning, it said.
“Still, there is chance for our local bourse to recover further today. On the chart, the benchmark FBM KLCI could climb towards the immediate resistance threshold of 1,785 ahead.
“Riding on the better sentiment, investors may find interest today in stocks like: (a) MMC and Mudajaya, after a local business daily reported that their joint venture vehicle is seen to be the front runner to clinch the RM8 billion central spine highway project that would stretch 465km from Kota Bahru to Bentong; (b) Malaysia Building Society, which has proposed to undertake a rights issue to raise maximum gross proceeds of RM1.5 billion (with the entitlement ratio and the issue price to be fixed later); and (c) Iris, following the award of a contract worth RM40 million from FELDA to build and develop an integrated community centre in Negeri Sembilan,” it said.
Elsewhere, Asian stocks jumped to three-week highs on Friday, propelled by gains on Wall Street as investors took a chance and cheered perceived progress to avert a possible U.S. default, even as questions remained over whether a deal could be struck, according to Reuters.
MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.7 percent, reaching highs not seen since Sept. 23. Tokyo's Nikkei climbed 1.1 percent, while Australian shares put on 1.8 percent, it said.

Regional equities rose in anticipation that the US government will be able to prevent a debt default next week. Reuters reported that the rally in Asia came after US stocks jumped over 2% in their biggest one-day gain since January 2 as investors became more confident that squabbling US politicians would at the very least avert a possible US debt default next week. In Malaysia,the KLCI settled at 1,785.75 points on gains in stocks like UEM SUNRISE BHD [] and PETRONAS GAS BHD []. The benchmarkrecorded at an intraday-high of 1,788.99 and a low of 1,783.53. TA Securities Holdings Bhd chartist Stephen Soo said the overnight relief rally on Wall Street on the perceived progress of the US government's debt management "should filter through to boost regional and local stocks moving forward". Across Bursa Malaysia today, 1.82 billion shares worth RM1.6 billion changed hands. There were 480 gainers versus 282 decliners. The top gainer was BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO (M) [] Bhd while KOSSAN RUBBER INDUSTRIES BHD [] was the leading decliner. The most-active stock was MALAYSIAN AIRLINE SYSTEM BHD []. Abroad, Japan’s Nikkei 225 climbed 1.48%. Within China, Hong Kong's Hang Seng closed 1.16% higher while the Shanghai Composite rose 1.7%. Nearer to home, Singapore Straits Times rose 0.31%. Earlier, HwangDBS Research Sdn Bhd indicated in a note that overnight gains in US markets might support Asian markets.
