KUALA LUMPUR (April 11): The FBM KLCI is poised to extend its gains for a third day running and close at a fresh all-time high on Thursday, as it rose firmly a day after the Election Commission finalised the general date.
At 12.30pm, the FBM KLCI rose 0.63% or 10.81 points to 1,707.01.
Gainers led losers by 351 to 259, while 269 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 571.8 million shares valued at RM911.84 million.
The top gainers included BAT, United PLANTATION []s, Dana Infra, Sime Darby, Petronas Dagangan, Allianz, Naim, Amway, IOI Corp and Petra Energy.
The losers included Carlsberg, Tasek, Aeon Credit, Sui Wah, Hong Leong Bank, LBS Bina, Tan Chong, P.I.E, Tien Wah and Shangri-La.
The actives included CLIQ, LBS Bina, Ingenco, Maybank, Tiger Synergy and Nextnation.
Affin Investment Bank Bhd vice president and head of retail research Dr Nazri Khan said strong foreign fund buying in the region as a whole had buoyed the local market as well.
“There seems to be strong optimism among foreign funds that have been buying into local equities, notably in the property and plantation sectors.
“Further, regional markets are also scaling upward. However, we think the market has been overbought and a slight pullback may be in store,” he told theedgemalaysia.com.
Meanwhile, Maybank Investment Bank Bhd head of retail research and chief chartist Lee Cheng Hooi in a note to clients Thursday said the FBM KLCI closed up by 5.93 points at 1,696.20 yesterday.
Its resistance level of 1,698 and 1,700 may cap market gains, whilst obvious support areas are located at 1,678 and 1,696, he said.
"The FBM KLCI made a previous all-time high of 1,699.68 on 4 Jan 2013 followed by a swing low of 1,597.00. The next key swings were 1,664.39 (high) and 1,613.94 (low).
"We prefer a short-term trading stance at current lofty index levels. Do look at the smaller and mid-cap stocks for trading ideas," said Lee.
Wall Street's record closing overnight and growing optimism about the Chinese economy underpinned Asian shares on Thursday while the Bank of Japan's bold monetary stimulus kept the yen pinned near fresh lows against major currencies, according to Reuters.
The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index both ended at historic highs on Wednesday, led by cyclical shares after Chinese trade data signalled a recovery in domestic demand, it said.
