Midday Market KLCI falls on profit taking ahead of Budget tabling

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 25):  The FBM KLCI fell at the midday break on Friday, ahead of the tabling of Budget 2014 in Parliament at 4pm by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

At 12.30pm, the benchmark FBM KLCI lost 4.53 points to 1,814.40, weighed by losses including at Tanaga and SapuraKencana.

Losers overtook gainers by 354 to 262, while 320 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 944.48 million shares valued at RM534.78 million.

The top losers included Dutch Lady, Nestle, Petronas Dagangan, Tenaga, Felda Global, Keck Seng, SapuraKencana andTiong Nam Logistics.

Hubline was the most actively traded counter with 207.8 million shares done. The stock rose half a sen to 6.5 sen.

The other actives included TMS, Sumatec, Iris Corp, MAS, XDL, China Stationery and TAS Offshore.

The gainers included United Plantations, GAB, Deleum, Bat, Carlsberg, Bursa, Amway, Hong Leong Bank and PPB.

M & A Securities research head Rosnani Rasul in note Friday said Wall Street resumed its buying momentum on Thursday thanks to weak economic data that suggests the US quantitative easing will continue in the foreseeable future.

She said she expects the tapering at the earliest will be done next year and this will be a precursor for the liquidity driven rally to continue.

As for the local market, Rosnani said the steady trajectory driven by Budget 2014 rally has pushed the index to defy the regional gravity.

She said the bellwether index, the FBM KLCI, had accelerated steadily to finish at another record high, its second multiyear-high in a week.

“Notwithstanding that, we expect the sentiment to lose steam today in view of the budget tabling later in the day.

“Investors will usually be in a cautious mode and likely to stay at the sideline in view of that. Investors will also use the excuse of FBM KLCI record closing to take profit today,” she said.
Elsewhere, a stronger yen depressed Japanese stocks on Friday, while the dollar was hemmed in near a two-year low against the euro by expectations the U.S. Federal Reserve will continue its monetary stimulus well into 2014, according to Reuters.

Those expectations were tempered, however, by continued worries over tighter cash markets in China, leading to a lopsided and selective rally in Asian markets, it said.
