Market Open KLCI edges up cautiously, Kanger makes firm debut

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 23): The FBM KLCI edged up cautiously in early trade on Monday while Christmas came early for Ace Market debutant Kanger International Bhd which made a solid start.
At 9.10am, the FBM KLCI added 0.68 points to 1,838.71.
Gainers led losers by 110 to 72, while 129 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 75.19 million shares valued at RM40.68 million.
The top gainers included United Plantations, PPB, GD Express, Tenaga, LPI Capital, I-Bhd, MPI and Puncak Niaga.
Kanger was the most actively traded counter with 27.58 million shares done. The stock surged 9.5 sen to 34.5 sen.
Hwang DBS Vickers Research in a market preview Monday said Wall Street extended its rally following the US Federal Reserve’s surprise decision to start the tapering process in Jan. Its major equity barometers were up between 0.3% and 1.1% to close at new record highs on Friday.
The research house said given the upbeat US stock market performance, the Malaysian bourse may regain its positive momentum after retreating on profit-taking pressures recently.
“On the chart, the benchmark FBM KLCI could be testing the immediate support-turned-resistance threshold of 1,840, possibly making its way towards its all-time peak of 1,851.94 ahead.
“Amid a quiet market environment – less than 1.0 billion shares changed hands last Friday – stocks that will likely attract added interest today include: (a) I-Bhd, which has unveiled a multi-step corporate exercise involving a 1-into-2 share split, a 1-for-5 bonus issue, a rights issue with free warrants (entitlements to be determined later), proposed acquisitions of 20 acres of land in Shah Alam for RM370 million as well as a restricted offer for sale of ICULS; (b) MAHB, as it is targeting to achieve EBITDA of RM861 million in FY14 under its KPIs program; and (c) Kanger, whose shares will be making a debut listing this morning,” it said.
Elsewhere, Asian markets inched cautiously higher on Monday encouraged by record highs for Wall Street, though anxiety over a credit squeeze in China has weighed on shares there while adding to pressure on emerging market currencies, according to Reuters.
Volumes were very light with Tokyo on holiday on Monday and Christmas almost here. Australia's main index added 0.3 percent while S&P 500 futures gained 0.25 percent, it said.

Mid-morning Market KLCI creeps up gingerly on thin trading volume

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 23): The FBM KLCI crept up gingerly at mid-morning on Monday but trading volume remained thin given the pre-holiday period.
At 10.01am, the FGBM KLCI added 1.99 points to 1,840.02.
Gainers led losers by 183 to 161, while 209 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 219.08 million shares valued at RM138.12 million.
The top gainers included United Plantations, Tenaga, BAT, Puncak, I-Bhd, MPI, Matrix, Bintulu Port and Aeon.
Newly-listed Kanger International Bhd was the most actively traded counter with 41.44 million shares done. The stock surged 8.5 sen to 33.5 sen.
The other actives included TMS, Tiger Synergy, Daya Materials, Sumatec, Infotec and Winsun.
The decliners included KLK, Aeon Credit, Carlsberg, Hartalega, Lafarge Malaysia, Gamuda, Hong Leong Bank, Deleum and Perak Corp.
Kenanga IB Research in a strategy note Monday said it expects the local equity market to see quiet trading this week with thinner volume ahead of the coming holidays.
The research house said the conclusion of the U.S. FOMC meeting last week where it announced the start of stimulus tapering had at last removed the near-term timing uncertainty of the much anticipated move.
“Technically speaking, the FBMKLCI’s positive technical outlook appears intact; strong support should emerge at the 1,826 level followed by the psychological 1,800 level.
“All our three portfolios went south last week, no thanks to the volatile share price performances in small caps. Nonetheless, year-to-date, our portfolios are still ahead of the FBM KLCI index by 880-1,862 basis points,” it said.
