KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 7): The key FBM KLCI fell after experiencing ‘normal fluctuations’ amid a volatile market.
At 5pm market close, the benchmark index fell 4.07 points or 0.2% over yesterday to settle at 1,825.11 points.
According to Danny Wong, the CEO of Areca Capital Sdn Bhd, the market movement resembled a ‘yo-yo’ trend but he referred to this as ‘normal fluctuation’.
“Since yesterday, we have seen the market on a profit-taking trend. But today, the market movement resembles a normal fluctuation,” he said.
“We notice that mid-cap stocks have been performing well, in particular the oil & gas stocks. They have performed ‘quite a fair bit’.”
Wong opined he does not see the market reacting yet to the Federal Reserve’s impending release of the minutes of the December meeting of Fed policymakers tomorrow, and this coming Friday’s non-farm payrolls data.
JF Apex Securities Bhd in a note today, said the market might see a small sell-down ahead of the Chinese New Year (CNY) due to continuous profit taking.
It noted in many past years, a small rally often built up before the first day of the lunar new year for ethnic Chinese.
But the research house said it expects the bourse to be positive after the CNY period with year-end target of 1,920 points and target price earnings ratio of 15 times forward earnings.
Across Bursa Malaysia, 1.74 billion shares worth RM1.9 billion were traded. Gainers outnumbered losers in 435:382, while 294 counters remained unchanged.
The top gainer was IQ Group Holdings Bhd while the top loser was British American Tobacco (M) Bhd. Ingenuity Consolidated Bhd was the most active counter.
Reuters reported that Asian shares fell to a near four-month low on Tuesday, though the dollar rebounded after overnight weakness on disappointing U.S. services sector data that raised concerns about stuttering growth in the world's largest economy.
U.S. stocks slipped on Monday after a mixed batch of economic reports, resulting in the Standard & Poor's 500 losing in the first three trading sessions of 2014 after ramping up 30 percent last year.
Data from the Institute for Supply Management showed the pace of growth in the U.S. services sector slowed for a second straight month in December with business activity expanding at a slower rate and new orders contracting.
HwangDBS Vickers Research in a note today said against the precarious external backdrop, the mood to sell equities will likely persist on the bourse.
The research house said from a technical perspective, the bourse could test the immediate support level of 1,825 points ahead.
Elsewhere in the region, Japan’s Nikkei 225 was down 0.59%, South Korea’s Kospi rose 0.32%, and Singapore’s Straits Times Index closed 0.09% down.
In China, the Shanghai Composite Index ended 0.08% higher and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng also closed 0.13% higher.
