KUALA LUMPUR (May 16): The FBM KLCI closed at an all-time high, breaking its previous intraday high and record close, despite negative market breadth as losers outnumbered gainers.

At 5.00 pm market close, the key index rose 3.51 points or 0.19% to settle at 1,883.34, supported by gains in index-linked stocks such as IOI Corporation Bhd and Petronas Chemicals Bhd.

Goh Kay Chong, senior remisier at SJ Securities, said that the KLCI is holding well, and noted that funds were still entering the market.

“The KLCI will only go into correction if it drops below 1,856 points. Even though the index is near its all-time high, we still need to be cautious,” he told theedgemalaysia.com.

Bursa Malaysia saw total trades of 1.68 billion shares, equivalent to RM2.30 billion.

Losers outnumbered gainers at 420 against 341, while 328 shares remained unchanged.

Top losers were led by Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd, while the gainers were led by United Plantations Bhd. The counter with the highest volume of trades was Malaysian Airline Systems Bhd, hit by its deeper first quarter loss.

Across Asia, Japan’s Nikkei fell 1.41%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 0.08%, while South Korea’s Kospi rose 0.16%.

Reuters reported that Asian shares came under pressure on Friday, with Japanese stocks skidding as the yen rose against the dollar, which has struggled in recent days as U.S. Treasury yields fell.

A second day of losses on Wall Street pulled MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan down 0.1 percent. The index has gained about 2 per cent on the week during which Wall Street climbed to record highs.
