Market Open KLCI slips in early trade as investors remain on sidelines

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 6):  The FBM KLCI slipped in early trade on Thursday as external factors remained a concern to investors who have appeared to stay on the sidelines ahead of more crucial data from the US as well as Malaysia’s December trade numbers due out on Friday.

At 9.05am, the FBM KLCI fell 1.58 points to 1,784.30.

Gainers edged losers by 86 to 67, while 125 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 66.11 million shares valued at RM34.31 million.

The top losers included Genting Plantations, HLFG, Genting, AMMB, UMW, Berjaya Food, Petronas Chemicals and IJM Corp.

M & A Securities head of research Rosnani Rasul in a market preview Thursday said Wall Street ended marginally lower tempered by the strength in Yen and ahead of the US unemployment numbers due to be released on Friday.

The S&P 500 and DJIA shed 3.56 and 5.01 points to end at 1,751.64 and 15,440.23 respectively.

Rosnani said that the Yen, one of the world’s safe haven currencies, had been inching up, rather not surprisingly, due to the volatility in global equity market, adding it was now traded at Yen101.46 per dollar, gaining in momentum against Yen104 per dollar low previously.

“This has stoked trading fear as the strength in Yen would put Japan export’s in a doldrums again.  

“As for the rest of trading week, we opine that the market will remain lackluster with downside risk particularly when the US is due to issue its latest unemployment numbers on Friday.

Rosnani said an improving unemployment rate of the US would be a bad news for the global equity market as the US Federal Reserve will have no qualms to cut its bond purchase program further from the current USD65 billion a month.

“On the same token, Malaysia will also be issuing its December trade numbers on Friday. Consensus is expecting a solid and steady export growth of above 6%. 

“All in, we expect some investors to hold their breath and stay at the sideline in view of the upcoming announcements,” she said.

Elsewhere, Asian shares took a tentative step forward on Thursday as investors remained wary after the recent selloff in emerging markets raised concerns about the global economic outlook, according to Reuters.

A mixed picture on global growth added to the cautious tone in global markets, with many looking ahead to the crucial U.S. jobs report on Friday for a measure of comfort, it said.
