KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 10): The FBM KLCI rose 0.45% in early trade on Monday, in line with last Friday’s gains at Wall Street and the cautious uptrend at most regional markets.
At 9.05am, the FB KLCI added 8.13 points to 1,816.72.
Gainers led losers by 189 to 31, while 129 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 115.07 million shares valued at RM42.68 million.
The top gainers included United Plantations, Petronas Gas, Uzma, Hong Leong Bank, Batu Kawan, Chaya Mata Sarawak, Latitude, Petronas Chemicals, RHB Capital and CHHB.
Hong Leong IB Research in a market preview Monday said it was turning more positive on Bursa Malaysia as the index had been able to maintain its posture above the 200-day moving average (1783) and staged a breakout above 1,800 psychological barrier last Friday.
“Further decisive breakout above 10-day moving average (now at 1809) will drive index further towards the 1825 (50% FR) and 1838 (38.2% FR) upside targets.
“On the flip side, a breach below the key supports of 1,783-1,800 will witness a resumption of sell-down to retest 1,750-1,770 territories.
Elsewhere, Asian markets were set for guarded gains on Monday encouraged that Wall Street was able to weather a seemingly disappointing U.S. jobs report, though there is more than enough event risk ahead to keep investors on their toes, according to Reuters.
Crucially, the new head of the Federal Reserve, Janet Yellen, delivers her first testimony to the House on Tuesday and the senate on Thursday, and markets will be hoping for reassurance that policy will stay loose for a long time to come, it said.

KLCI opens firmer, Petronas Gas up
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’ blue chips started Monday on a firm note, in line with key regional markets, with Petronas Gas among the top gainers while retail interest focused on Latitute and CHHB.
At 9am, the KLCI was up 3.7 points to 1,812.29. Turnover was 57.76 million shares valued at RM14.44mil. There were 141 gainers, 27 losers and 110 counters unchanged.
Hwang DBS Vickers Research (HDBSVR) said the KLCI could pull further away from the 1,800 psychological mark towards the immediate resistance hurdle of 1,825 after the firmer close on Wall Street last Friday.
Petronas Gas rose 24 sen to RM23.34 and Petronas Chemicals seven sen to RM6.87. Among the smaller oil and gas-related players, Uzma added 15 sen to RM5.95 and Yinson eight sen to RM7.45.
CHHB rose 13 sen to RM1.72 and Latitude Tree nine sen to RM2.27 in active trade.
Among plantations, Batu Kawan rose eight sen to RM19.70 but FGV fell eight sen to RM4.35.
Also lower were Faber, AFG, MAHB and DRB-Hicom.
