KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 17): The FBM KLCI gained 8.11 point or 0.4% % in line with other Asian markets, on the back of exceptionally huge trades of 3.63 billion shares.

The turnover today was the highest in two years.

Gains in Malaysian plantation shares and other blue chips had supported the key index's rise, while active trades in small-medium stocks had sent the trading volume up.

At 5.00 pm, the KLCI settled at 1,827.48.

Index-linked plantation stocks like PPB Group Bhd, Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd (KLK), and IOI Corp Bhd rose along with heavyweight Tenaga Nasional Bhd.

Bursa Malaysia saw 3.63 billion shares, worth RM2.58 billion, change hands. There were 573 gainers versus 319 decliners.

The top gainer was Dutch Lady Milk Industries Bhd while Sarawak Oil Palms Bhd led decliners. The most-active stock was PDZ Holdings Bhd.

Earlier, TA Securities Holdings Bhd wrote in a note that trading momentum on small-cap and penny stocks was expected to stay robust.

Lee Cherng Wee, analyst with JF Apex Securities, concurred. He said: “The small and medium stocks are very active and this has contributed to the high volume today.”

In the region, Asian stock markets rose. Japan's Nikkei rose 0.56%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng climbed 1.07% while the Shanghai Composite was 0.92% higher.

Reuters reported that Asian shares built on their recent rally on Monday as worries about emerging markets continued to ebb, sucking the safe-haven support out of the U.S. dollar while giving commodities a lift.

Stocks across the region felt the benefit with MSCI's index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan up 0.7 percent, bringing its gains to almost 6 percent in eight sessions. Indonesia's market added 0.8 percent, as did the Philippines.

According to Bloomberg, emerging-market stocks rose after record new credit in China bolstered confidence in the world’s second-largest economy.

Indonesia’s rupiah climbed for a fifth day. The rupiah headed for the longest wining streak since July 2011 versus the dollar, while the Philippine peso and Malaysia’s ringgit advanced by at least 0.4 percent.

“The latest China data has reinforced the view that the economic recovery is sustainable,” Agus Yanuar, President Director at PT Samuel Aset Manajemen, said by phone in Jakarta.
