KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 18): The FBM KLCI fell 2.24 points or 0.1% to close at 1,825.24 points on ‘mild’ profit taking, according to dealers.
The KLCI's decline came on losses in stocks like SapuraKencana Petroleum Bhd and Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd.
A dealer told theedgemalaysia.com over telephone that today’s lacklustre market performance was due to mild profit taking by investors.
“Also, we hear retail investors are pulling out, following local and foreign funds that are on a selling effort,” the dealer said.
The KLCI's decline came in the wake of yesterday's 8.11-point or 0.45% rise.
Today, JF Apex Securities said it expected consolidation in the KLCI for the moment but viewed the uptrend in the index as still intact.
The research house said the KLCI's bullish momentum slowed after being capped by resistance at 1,826 points.
Across Bursa Malaysia, 2.9 billion shares worth RM2.3 billion were traded. Losers overwhelmed gainers by 454 versus 393 while 307 counters remained unchanged.
The top gainer was Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Bhd while the top loser was Allianz Malaysia Bhd warrant (Allianz-PA).
Sumatec Resources Bhd was the most-active counter.
Across Asia, the Nikkei 225 closed 2.7% higher. In China, the Shanghai Composite ended 0.77% lower while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 0.23%.
Elsewhere, South Korea’s Kospi rose 0.03% while Singapore’s Straits Times Index closed 0.05% up.
Reuters reported that Japanese shares surged and the yen sagged today after the Bank of Japan doubled loan programs aimed at stimulating bank lending and economic growth, while most other Asian shares were softer after solid gains in recent sessions.
Shanghai shares fell from a two-month high today, as China’s central bank drained 48 billion yuan ($7.92 billion) from the country’s money market after data showed new loans surged last month to their highest in four years.
