Market Open KLCI dips in cautious trade, select blue chips weigh

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 21): The FBM KLCI dipped in early trade amidst cautious trade, weighed by losses at select blue chips including Genting-related stocks and Telekom Malaysia.

At 9.10am, the benchmark index shed 0.62 points to 1,827.19.

Gainers led losers by 202 to 77, while 156 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 201.39 million shares valued at RM82.13 million.

The top losers included PPB, MISC, Genting Plantations, Carlsberg, Genting, Telekom, Petron, AFG, BHIC and Parkson.

Hwang DBS Vickers Research in a market preview Friday said Wall Street rose last night.

It said key US equity barometers were up between 0.6% and 0.7% at the closing bell as sentiment was lifted by better manufacturing data and rising corporate M&A activity.

“Yet, we reckon our Malaysian bourse will likely tread sideways today. Essentially, profit-taking pressures may cap its short-term performance. On the chart, the benchmark FBM KLCI could oscillate around the immediate support threshold of 1,825 for the time being

“Investors will probably find interest today in stocks like: (a) Prestariang, which has proposed a 1-for-1 bonus issue; (b) Adventa, as its shares will be uplifted from being classified as a PN17 company effective this morning; and (c) Inari, after its net profit jumped 171% year-on-year to RM24 million in the recent quarter mainly due to contributions from new businesses acquired.

Elsewhere, a rosy survey on factory activity in the United States gave Asian share markets an early boost on Friday, though underlying concerns about China's economic growth kept investors from rushing to buy riskier assets, according to Reuters.

Japan's Nikkei share average led the way, soaring 2.1 percent and Australian shares tacked on 0.6 percent to edge near a five-year peak hit in October. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan advance 0.4 percent, it said.
