Few takers for overseas restaurant scheme
GEORGE TOWN: Only a few restaurant owners have seized the opportunity to venture abroad despite the Government's allocation of RM180mil in soft loans to help them open branches overseas.
Only 25 applicants have received the loans, offered via Export-Import Bank of Malaysia Bhd (EXIM Bank) Malaysian Kitchen Financing Facility (MKFF) since its inception in 2007.
EXIM Bank assistant vice-president (product development department) Zulkipli Md Yunos said many of the loan recipients operated restaurants that prepared fusion Malaysian cuisine.
“Sadly, we do not have any takers from our local nasi kandar operators. We hope more food operators will come forward and apply for this scheme,” he told StarBiz at a Star Outstanding Business Award (SOBA) 2011 forum here recently.
The bank had received 120 applications for the scheme and approved loans worth a total of RM40mil, of which RM20mil had been disbursed to successful applicants.
