KUALA LUMPUR: Special awards will be presented for the first time to
five most successful newcomers during the launch of fifth edition of
Malaysia 1000, a directory that provides comprehensive information on
top Malaysian companies, on Sept 14.
Basis Group Chairman Tan Sri Dr Abu Hassan Omar said that the five
would be chosen from those who have been listed into the directory this
year.

The book will be launched by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad at at the Palace of Golden Horses, here.

"For this year, we have set a minimum turnover of RM280 million for
each company as the criteria for the selection into the directory
compared to RM145 million previously," he told a press conference in
conjunction with the launch of the business directory here, today.

Also present were the Malaysian News Agency (Bernama) chairman Datuk
Abdul Rahman Sulaiman, Bernama General Manager Datuk Hasnul Hassan and
BASIS Publication House Sdn Bhd Managing Director Zainoor Sulaiman.

Malaysia 1000 is a joint project of BASIS Publications House Sdn
Bhd, Bernama and Matrade, the Malaysia External Trade Development
Corporation.

Abu Hassan said the listed companies have shown an improvement in
turnover of about 20 per cent annually since the launch of the first
edition in 2003.

The business directory provides access to comprehensive information
in the cream of the crop of Malaysian companies in a wide range of
corporate and industrial sectors, ranking them in terms of financial
performance and listing the leaders of respective sectors, in an
organised format designed for fast and easy reference.

Abdul Rahman said Bernama was happy to be associated in the joint project.

"This is an extension of our news service and it reflects our
capability in diversifying into areas where information is the core
business. We also feel that such publication will be a valuable resource
for the business community.

"I would like to assure our partner that we will continue to explore
further opportunities in areas where we can support with our
journalistic talents to contribute towards a well-informed society," he
said. -- BERNAMA
