Market Thoughts

US stocks abruptly turned mixed in
the final seconds of trading Monday, with the Dow ending in negative
territory, while the S&P 500 still managed to log its best close
since DJIA ended down 1.44 points, or 0.01 percent, to close at
12,981.51, turning lower in the final minutes of trading and failing to
close above the psychologically-important 13,000 level.

Back to
local front, we expect benchmark FBM KLCI to trend sideways with a
slightly upward bias. The index is expected to remain between its
support and resistance of 1530 and 1600 points respectively.

Business
licence compliance costs in Malaysia will be reduced by more than half
by June following a joint review by the government and private sector.

said 395 of 761 business licences will be eliminated or simplified.

IGB
Corp Bhd is said to be mulling over a hotel real estate investment trust
(REIT) to unlock the value of its hospitality assets in the country and
overseas. Industry observers said the hotel REIT was likely to come

Bhd, had successfully injected its two retail assets in Mid Valley City -
the Mid Valley Megamall and The Gardens shopping mall into a retail

S&P 500 Retreats From Almost 4-Year High
The Standard & Poor‟s 500 Index climbed to an almost four-year high as an increase in American home sales helped halt a global drop in equities. Oil snapped a seven-day rally while the yen and Treasuries advanced. The S&P 500 added 0.1 percent to 1,367.59 at 4 p.m. in New York, reversing an early drop of a 0.8 percent and closing at the highest since June 2008. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 1.44 points to 12,981.51, turning lower at the close of trading after failing to hold above 13,000 for a third session in the past week.

Merkel Wins Greek Aid Vote After Warning of ‘Incalculable Damage’ on Delay
Chancellor Angela Merkel won a parliamentary vote on Greek aid after warning German lawmakers that pushing Greece out of the euro would risk “incalculable” damage, defying a public backlash against more bailout funds. In a vote that showed dissent in her coalition growing, 496 members of the lower house, or Bundestag, voted in favor of the 130 billion-euro ($174 billion) package yesterday in Berlin; 90 voted against and five abstained.

European Stocks Drop as G-20 Rebuffs Boosting IMF Resources; HSBC Declines
European stocks declined, extending last week‟s retreat, as the Group of 20 nations rejected calls from the euro area to increase the International Monetary Fund‟s lending resources. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index slid 0.3 percent to 263.86 at the close, after earlier falling as much as 1.2 percent. The benchmark measure extended last week‟s 0.4 percent retreat. The gauge has still climbed 7.9 percent this year buoyed by U.S. economic reports and as investors speculated that the euro area will contain its sovereign-debt crisis.

Greece Cut to Selective Default by S&P
Greece‟s credit ratings were cut to “Selective Default” by Standard & Poor‟s after it negotiated the biggest sovereign debt restructuring in history. S&P dropped Greece‟s rating from CC, two levels above default, after the government added clauses to its debt designed to mop up investors unwilling to take part in the exchange, the New York-based company said in a statement today.
