Market Thoughts

US stocks closed in the red as Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke dashed hopes for further monetary stimulus during his speech to Congress on the economy. Similarly, European stocks pared gains to close slightly down on the day as shares tracked losses in the U.S. market, which turned negative after Bernanke told Congress the US job market was far from normal. Stocks had earlier rose at the open after news of US GDP grew at a 3 percent annual rate, logging the fastest gain since 2Q10.

On the local market, the FBM KLCI jumped 12.92 points to 1569.65 points to break out from its sideways trend. However, given the decline in US and European markets, we expect some profit taking on the KLCI. The index remains between its support and resistance of 1530 and 1600 points respectively.

Sime Darby may list some units in 2013
Sime Darby Bhd plans to list some of its six business divisions next year in view of their sterling individual financial performances. Malaysia‟s oldest conglomerate has operations in six business divisions - plantations, property, energy, automotive, healthcare, industrial - which are all grouped under its listed parent entity Sime Darby Bhd. Sime Darby president and group chief executive Datuk Mohd Bakke Salleh said the group was working on a few initiatives and the game plan was that the listing would be done in several phases. Kencana gets RM74m contract from ExxonMobil
Kencana HL Sdn Bhd has secured a RM74 million contract for the fabrication of Tapis R sub-structure for the Tapis Re-Development Project from ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Malaysia Inc. The contract is expected to contribute positively to the earnings and net assets per share of parent company, Kencana Petroleum Group, for the financial years ending July 31 2012 to 2013. MAS ‘in crisis’, reports RM2.5b net loss for 2011
National carrier Malaysia Airline System Bhd says it is in crisis after posting worse-than-expected net losses for the fourth quarter and full-year ended December 31,2011. However, MAS, which posted a fourth quarter net loss of RM1.28 billion against RM225.9 million net loss a year ago, remains confident that the worst is over and is looking at a breakeven year this year. Ananda plans Measat stake sale, paper says
Malaysia's second richest man T. Ananda Krishnan plans to sell his stake in satellite operator Measat Global Bhd, a move that comes days after he initiated the sale of power assets valued at US$3 billion (RM9 billion). Local newspaper The Straits Times (ST) reported that the power and satellite assets could be worth close to US$3.5 billion (RM10.5 billion), implying that Measat could be worth around US$500 million (RM1.5 billion). Newco to take over two Scomi units' businesses
Scomi Group Bhd is restructuring its energy logistics unit, Scomi Marine Bhd, and oilfield services (OFS) business to create a new company (newco) that will be a major upstream drilling services entity. The newco will have a more diversified income stream as well as combined expertise, Scomi said in a statement yesterday. (Source: Business Times)

Proton third quarter net loss widens to RM88m
Proton Holdings Bhd's net loss expanded to RM88 million for the third quarter ended December 31 2011 from a net loss of RM60.1 million previously on weaker sales. "The lower sales volume resulted in the group having had to adjust production numbers to better manage cost," it said in a press statement yesterday. Revenue in the period fell 21.8 per cent to RM1.43 billion from RM1.83 billion a year ago. (Source: Business Times)

Our comment:
The YTD results was well below our expectation. We believe the net loss was due to the lower sales volume (including Proton and Lotus) in the end of the year, the usual seasonal downtrend in the industry where the consumers will hold and buy their cars in the coming year. The bleeding Lotus subsidiary continues to pose damaging problem to Proton, thus it is interesting to see how their new owners, DRB-Hicom will deal with the problem.

The upcoming model, P3-21A would be important to the turn-around of Proton as the first global car Proton produced and will be vital for Proton to increase their Average Selling Price closer to RM60k. We expect the coming quarter, which is the last quarter for FY2011, will be another challenging period for Proton as it was hardly hit by the stricter loan approval, which saw the loan approval rate for Proton buyers dipped to a poor 30%. Maintain HOLD with a target price of RM5.50, which is capped by the DRB Hicom’s offer price.

S&P 500 Snaps Four-Day Advance
U.S. stocks fell, trimming the longest monthly rally in a year for the Standard & Poor‟s 500 Index, as Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke gave no indication of further measures to stimulate the economy. The S&P 500 fell 0.5 percent to 1,365.68 at 4 p.m. New York time, retreating from an almost four-year high. It still rose 4.1 percent in February, capping a third straight month of gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 53.05 points, or 0.4 percent, to 12,952.07.

Bernanke Affirms Low-Rate Pledge
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke affirmed that interest rates are likely to stay low at least through late 2014 without offering any indication that further monetary easing is under consideration. “At present, with the unemployment rate elevated and the inflation outlook subdued, the committee judges that sustaining a highly accommodative stance for monetary policy is consistent with promoting both objectives” for stable prices and maximum employment, Bernanke said today in testimony to the House Financial Services Committee in Washington.

U.S. Was Net Oil-Product Exporter in 2011
The U.S. exported more gasoline, diesel and other fuels than it imported in 2011 for the first time since 1949, the Energy Department said today. Shipments abroad of petroleum products exceeded imports by 439,000 barrels a day, the department said in the Petroleum Supply Monthly report.

European Stocks Are Little Changed, Post the Best Start to Year Since 1998
European stocks were little changed, erasing earlier gains, after U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke failed to signal further monetary easing in a testimony to the Congress. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index was unchanged at 264.32 at the close in London. Stocks earlier gained as much as 0.8 percent after the European Central Bank allotted more funds than projected under its long-term refinancing operation.

Monti Expects Agreement on Firewall Soon
Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, signaling the worst may be over for the euro region‟s most distressed bonds, said he expects leaders to strike a deal by the end of the month on expanding a debt-crisis firewall. While German Chancellor Angela Merkel has expressed reluctance to discuss increasing the size of Europe‟s bailout kitty at a European Union summit in Brussels beginning today, Monti said he‟s “confident” a deal will come.
