KUALA LUMPUR: Worldwide sales of semiconductors reached US$24.4bil
in May, up 1.4% from April's sales of US$24.1bil, the third consecutive
month of growth, but a sluggish global economy could impact the upward
trend.
The US-based Semiconductor Industry Association said May
marked the third consecutive month that sales have grown over the
previous month, "the longest streak of sequential monthly growth since
September 2010".
In its overnight report issued on Tuesday, SIA
said combined global sales for the March-April-May period over
December-January-February by the highest rate of 6.4% since June 2010.
As for on-year sales, it said the May sales of US$24.4bil were down 3.4% than a year ago.
SIA president & CEO Brian Toohey said recent sales were in line with industry projections of modest growth for the remainder of 2012.
"But a sluggish global economy continues to provide substantial headwinds, limiting more robust growth," he added.
