By Chong Jin Hun / theedgemarkets.com | July 20, 2016 : 12:05 PM MYTUALA LUMPUR (July 20): Malaysia's inflation, as measured by the consumer price index (CPI), rose 1.6% in June from a year earlier, on mainly on costlier liquor, tobacco, food and non-alcoholic drinks.
In a statement today, the Statistics Department said liquor and tobacco prices rose 21.9%, while prices for food and non-alcoholic drinks increased 4.2%. Transport and communication expenses however fell 8.5% and 2.2% respectively.
"Core inflation, which excludes most volatile items of fresh food, as well as administered prices of goods and services, rose 2.1% in June 2016, compared to the same period of the previous year," the department said.
Cumulative six-month CPI rose 2.7% from a year earlier. In monthly terms, June CPI climbed 0.2% from the preceding month, according to the department.
June's on-year 1.6% CPI rise slowed from May's 2% growth.
