TNB ready to provide power for MRT works (5347)
Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is ready to provide electricity supply for
use in the country's mega project, MyRapid Transit (MRT) Klang Valley
(Sungai Buloh-Kajang), said its general manager
(Kuala Lumpur) Datuk Ir Abdul Aziz Jaafar.
TNB
has no problem in providing the power supply as the national utility
company has excess capacity and this is not expected to create any
problem for TNB in the future, he said.
"There is sufficient
supply in the system...we have an electricity power capacity of 6480
megawatts (MW) and the amount of daily use or maximum demand only comes
to 2219 MW or 34 per cent. TNB still has excess capacity of 66 per cent
that could be supplied to new clients, including MRT.
"The projek only requires 50 MW or an equivalent of per cent, and this is not a burden to us," he told Bernama in an interview.
The MRT is the most comprehensive
long-term city public transportation project in the history of the
country's public transportation and is expected to be fully operational
in 2017.
On another note, Abdul Aziz said TNB Kuala Lumpur had
also recorded a loss of more than RM14 million due to power theft from
September 2011 to March this year, involving 2,000 cases on which
action had been taken.
The losses do not include 2,000 more
cases on which action are being taken and other cases such as the theft
of TNB devices like cables, high tension cable wires and metal
electricity conductors.
"TNB is regularly working on beating
these immoral activities as they could give a negative picture to
foreign investors," he said.
Abdul Aziz also appealed for an end to these activities, saying that it will be in the interest of everyone.
TNB
is Malaysia's largest power utility company with an estimated asset
value of RM71.4 billion. It has 28,000 employees throughout Peninsular
Malaysia and Sabah.-- BERNAMA
