DRB-HICOM to boost Pos Malaysia

SHAH ALAM: Pos Malaysia Bhd chief said the presence of DRB-HICOM Bhd as a substantial shareholder will benefit the national postal company.

But it would depend on what plans DRB-HICOM has in mind for Pos Malaysia and whether it wants to grow bigger than its current size, group managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Syed Faisal Albar said yesterday.

DRB-HICOM has the experience in turning around and improving business models of concession businesses, like Puspakom and Alam Flora.

In April, it emerged as the winning bidder for Khazanah Nasional Bhd's 32.21 per cent stake for RM622.8 million.

Syed Faisal said the deal between Pos Malaysia and Khazanah is on target to close by the end of this month.

At a media briefing inSelangor, Syed Faisal said Pos Malaysia will invest around RM100 million over the next three years to consolidate its existing 29 mail processing centres (MPCs).

Pos Malaysia intends to have only nine MPCs in order to cut operational cost and improve efficiency and delivery services.

The company is looking at se-veral sites in Ipoh, Johor, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak, Pahang and Terengganu.

"We will look at the cheapest option which is to use government land where possible," he said.

Pos Malaysia has embarked on consolidating its MPCs through the setting up of the National Mailing and Parcel Hub in Shah Alam, which serves as a hub for sorting and transit of mail and parcels, for RM256 million.

Operations at the hub began last November following the consoli-dation of the central region's four MPCs in Dayabumi in Kuala Lumpur, Bukit Raja in Klang, Bandar Baru Bangi and Seremban.
