KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Industrial Production Index (IPI) increased
by 1.4% in July 2012 compared with a year ago but the output contracted
4.7% on-month from June.
The Statistics Department said on
Monday the on-year increase in July was underpinned by the stronger
performance of the manufacturing sector, where the index rose 5.5%
It
said the stronger on-year manufacturing output was due to increases in
petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products (9.9%) ;transport
equipment and other manufactures (17.5%); and electrical and
electronics products (1.9%).
"The seasonally adjusted (manufacturing) output for July 2012 decreased 3.4% as compared to June 2012," it said.
The department said for July 2012, the electricity index increased 2.8% on-year. However, mining contracted, declining 10.4%.
The IPI in June remained unchanged positive 3.7% on-year.
"On
a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, the IPI in July 2012
contracted by 4.7% which was attributed by the reduction in all
indices. Manufacturing contracted 3.4%, mining (10.2%) and electricity
(1.8%)," it said.
