KUALA LUMPUR (April 17): Top Glove Corp Bhd soared as much as 4% to its highest in about two and a half years on updates that China's bird flu death toll has risen to 16.
At 12.30pm, Top Glove was traded at RM6.08 with some 2.4 million shares done.
The fifth-largest gainer across the bourse had earlier risen as much as 23 sen to RM6.10, the highest since September 2010, Bloomberg data show. This compares to a low of RM3.85 seen on September 23, 2011.
Reuters reported that two more people in China have died from a new strain of avian influenza, bringing to 16 the number of deaths from the H7N9 virus, and the government has warned that the number of infections could rise.
The latest victims were from the commercial capital of Shanghai, where the majority of the 77 cases have been found, the official Xinhua news agency reported late on Tuesday. The exact source of infection remains unknown and no human-to-human spread of the virus has been confirmed.
