KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd
clarified the collection of the 1% charge was to encourage the
development of renewable energy via cost sharing among electricity
consumers in Peninsular Malaysia.
The power company said on
Friday the 1% charge had been imposed since December 2011 after the
launch of the Feed-in-Tariff (FiT) system.
The charge was imposed on all users, except for domestic customers who used less than 300kWh or equivalent to RM77 in a month.
Tenaga
explained the FiT system was a funding mechanism under the Renewable
Energy Act (REA) 2011 and Sustainable Energy Development Authority
(SEDA) Act 2011.
It said that it acted only as collecting agent
on behalf of the SEDA for the renewable energy fund. SEDA is an agency
under the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water.
