Re: May 16th THUR - BC Daily Trading Floor - continued chitty chatter on the floor
Economy
US: Rising revenues to shrink US deficit rapidly through 2015.
The US deficit is shrinking considerably more quickly than previously
thought, the congressional budget office (CBO) said in a report that
could sap congress' sense of urgency to find further budget savings.
The CBO said the deficit will fall to USD378bn by 2015 with no
congressional action a sharp contrast to the USD1trn recession-driven
deficits in each of President Barack Obama's first four years in
office. The revisions are driven largely by rising tax revenue from
individuals and corporations as the economy sputters back to life.
(Reuters)
US: Biggest drop in producer prices. US producer
prices recorded their largest drop in three years in April as gasoline
and food costs tumbled, pointing to weak inflation pressures that
should give the Federal Reserve latitude to keep monetary policy very
accommodative. The Labour Department said its seasonally adjusted
producer price index fell 0.7% last month. (Reuters)
EU: France slides into recession, Germany ekes out growth.
Germany's economy crept back into growth in the first quarter of the
year, after a sharp contraction at the end of 2012, while France
slipped into recession. Germany grew by just 0.1% on the quarter,
weaker than expected as a harsh winter prevented a stronger rebound.
The German statistics office revised down its figure for the end of
2012 to show a contraction of 0.7% from 0.6%. France entered a shallow
recession after contracting by 0.2% in the first three months of the
year, as it did in the last quarter of 2012. (Reuters)
UK: Data confirm jobs recovery has stalled.
Workers have suffered an even more painful squeeze on earnings as
official data confirmed the recent jobs recovery has stalled, with
employment falling and unemployment up. Average earnings growth dropped
to 0.4% in Jan- March compared with a year earlier. The disappointing
earnings growth was partly because employers deferred bonuses. But
excluding bonuses, average earnings increased 0.8%, the lowest since
records began in 2001. (Financial Times)
Malaysia: Economy grew 4.1% in Q1, as
manufacturing slows. Malaysia's economy grew at 4.1% in the first
quarter ended March 31, 2013, as manufacturing recorded slower growth
due to the weak external conditions, but domestic demand will continue
to underpin further growth. Bank Negara Malaysia said amid this weaker
external environment, the Malaysian economy expanded at a slower pace
compared with the 6.5% in the fourth quarter ended Dec 31, 2012 and the
5.1% a year ago in Q1, 2012. It added domestic demand is expected to
remain as the key driver of growth, driven by sustained private sector
expansion and supported by the public sector. (StarBiz)
Thailand: Cuts rice export target. Thai rice
exporters have cut a forecast for 2013 exports of the grain to 6.0m
tonnes from 6.5m hit by uncompetitive prices caused by a government
purchase scheme and a strong baht currency. The latest export forecast
was down 13% from the 6.9m tonnes. Thailand exported in 2012 and was
far below the record of 10.6m tonnes in 2011. (Reuters)
Markets
WCT (Outperform, TP: RM2.87): Optimistic about
bagging RM1.5bn contracts. WCT, which is confident of clinching RM1.5bn
in new contracts this year, has so far secured jobs worth RM500m from
about RM5bn worth of tenders submitted. The company has tendered for
RM3bn worth of contracts locally, with another RM2bn from overseas,
especially the Middle East. (Financial Daily)
Gas Malaysia: On track to higher profit. Gas
Malaysia believes it is on track to higher profitability, after having
been affected by increased gas tariffs since June 2011. Group managing
director Datuk Muhamad Noor Hamid said Gas Malaysia’s 10-year gas
supply agreement with Petroliam Nasional (Petronas) will be a major
catalyst for the profit growth. “We are fully contracted with Petronas
to receive 40 million standard cu ft per day (MMScfd) this year.
Another 30 MMScfd and 40 MMScfd will be provided in 2014 and 2015
respectively.”(Financial Daily)
Globetronics: Spends RM40m on new chips for US and Japan smart mobile devices.
Globetronics Technology plans to spend RM35m to RM40m on fresh
designing and development activities in the second half of 2013. The
company would use the money to develop the next generation of sensor
chips that would enhance the interface features and applications of
smart mobile devices. (StarBiz)
Astro: Signs RM497.5m deal with Measat. Astro
Malaysia Holdings has entered into an agreement with Measat Global Bhd
(MGB) for the utilisation of transponder capacity on the Measat-3c
satellite for a fee of RM497.5m. the related party transaction signed
via its unit Measat Broadcast Network Systems SB, and MGB's unit Measat
Satellite Systems SB, would enable Astro to utilise transponder
capacity of 6 Ku-band transponders on the satellite in tranches over a
period of 15 years starting from the commencement date. (StarBiz)
BIMB: To start board talks on Dubai Financial stake buy.
BIMB Holdings will initiate detailed discussions within its board on
the plan to acquire Dubai Financial Group LLC's equity interest in Bank
Islam Malaysia by month-end. Group MD and CEO Johan Abdullah said at
this juncture, valuation and pricing parameters for the acquisition had
been determined. BIMB owns 51% of Bank Islam, while Dubai Financial has
a 30.5% stake, with the remaining 18.5% under Lembaga Tabung Haji.
Meanwhile, Bank Islam MD Datuk Seri Zukri Samat reiterated the group's
interest in expanding business to Indonesia, despite the country's new
guideline of limiting only 40% foreign ownership in a company.
(Business Times)
Pharmaniaga: Q1 profit rebounds to RM25m.
Pharmaniaga registered a net profit of RM25.2m in its first quarter
ended March 31 2013 to reverse the RM7.5m net loss in the preceding
quarter. Group revenue rose 3.7% to RM500.3m from RM446.7m previously.
Chairman Tan Sri Lodin Wok Kamaruddin said it was a good start to the
financial year with the company registering enhanced profit. Lodin
added that the increase in revenue was due to heightened demand from
both the government as well as the private sector. (Business Times)
MARKET UPDATE
US stocks climbed higher even as the country’s industrial production weakened,
as the weaker manufacturing numbers reinforced expectations that the
Federal Reserve would maintain its accommodative monetary stance and
keep markets awash with liquidity. Nonetheless, confidence amongst
homebuilders improved in May for the first time in five months as
buyers continue to rush to capitalize on near record-low mortgage
rates. Overnight, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 rose
0.4% and 0.5% to 15,275.70 and 1,658.78 respectively.
Worryingly to some market observers, European equities also rose despite
a report from Eurostat showing the combined economy of the euro area
shrinking more than forecast, down 0.2% in the first quarter of the
year and extending the bloc’s recession to a sixth quarter as the
disconnect between economic reality and market exuberance becomes more
apparent. Spain and Italy gained 1.3% and 1.0% while France, Germany
and UK rose 0.4%, 0.3% and 0.1%.
Asian markets had relatively bright trading sessions, with
most major indices closing higher on the back of stronger performances
by its Western counterparts. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index and China’s
Shanghai Composite Index closed 0.5% and 0.4% higher while Singapore’s
Straits Times Index rose 0.3%. India’s Sensex rocketed 2.5% overnight
following a comment by the Reserve Bank of India’s Governor saying that
he would “take note” of softening inflation at next month’s policy
review. Back home, the FBM KLCI closed 0.3% lower on selective
profit-taking.
The days after (the 13th General Election) - FBM
KLCI: +5.2% (peak +7.7%), FBM Emas: +6.8% (peak +7.3%), FBM Mid 70:
+10.7% (peak +11.2%), FBM Small Cap: +17.9% (peak +18.1%). Amongst
stocks under coverage with Outperform calls which have done admirably
in the corresponding period – Prestariang: +56.9%, Dayang Enterprise:
+41.8%, Hock Seng Lee: +24.1%, E&O: +20.6%, TRC Synergy: +20.5%,
Cypark Resources: +19.3% and Perdana Petroleum: +19.3%. More room to
run, or is this the end? With risk appetites still a little raised
following some pent-up demand, perhaps a little more, but we would be
increasingly cautious on further gains especially in the small-cap
space as market players may soon opt to rotate their investments back
into the larger-caps, the clear shift being evident in the
peak-to-current performances in the respective indices.
On corporate news flows, BIMB Holdings is reportedly close to
securing a stake in Bank Islam while CIMB Group is also apparently
close to sealing the deal to acquire Bank of Commerce in Philippines,
both of which were supposed to have hit the skids recently. WCT (Outperform, TP: RM2.87) meanwhile, is confident of securing about RM1.5bn worth of contract this year, reinforcing our positive view on the stock.
