KUALA LUMPUR (May 20): The FBM KLCI remained in positive territory at mid-morning on Monday, in line with the general uptrend at key regional markets.

At 10.05am, the FBM KLCI added 5.34 points to 1,774.50.

Gainers outpaced losers by 511 to 125, whie 219 counters traded unchanged. Volume was 707.03 million shares valued at RM417.3 million.

The top gaioners included Petronas Dagangan, Pintaras, Allianz, Cahya Mata Sarawak, MNRB, Nestle, Dutch Lady, Deleum, Petronas Gas and SapuraKencana.

Luster was the most actively traded counter with 62.45 million shares done. The stock rose one sen to 16.5 sen.

The other actives included Daya Materials, Iris Corp, TH Heavy Engineering, Instanco, Ingenco, CLIQ and Asiapac.

The decliners included Genting PLANTATION []s, Tasek, Petrol One, AMMB, JobStreet, MBM Resources and Sarawak Oil Palms.

Maybank IB Research head Lee Cheng Hooi in a note to clients Monday said the wider support areas for the FBM KLCI were in the 1,718 to 1,765 zone.

He said the key resistance levels of 1,769 and 1,826 will see some liquidation activities.

Lee said the FBM KLCI was in overbought and bearish divergent territory and the EW count suggests a stalling uptrend towards 1,826.22.

“This could cause investors to continue to adopt a trading strategy.

“Despite the high volumes traded, the gap-up move may not be filled just yet. Investors may continue bargain-hunting for lower liners and laggard stocks in the property, O&G and finance sectors” he said.

The yen pulled up from a 4-1/2 year low against the dollar on Monday after Japan's economics minister said a further steady drop in the yen could have negative effects on households, pushing the dollar to a low of 102.00, according to Reuters.

"People say the excessively strong yen has corrected quite a bit. If the yen continues to weaken steadily from here, negative effects on people's lives will emerge," Economics Minister Akira Amari told a Sunday talk show - sparking some buying back of the yen in a thin market, it said.
