Marrybrown scores a first in Myanmar

JOHOR BARU: Malaysian home-grown halal quick service restaurant operator Marrybrown Sdn Bhd has become the first international company to open an outlet in Myanmar.

Business development manager Joshua Liew said the company wanted to take advantage of the country’s open-door policy by becoming the first Malaysian quick service restaurant to set up an outlet there.

He said the company opened its first restaurant in Yangon on Friday and was looking to have about 16 outlets in Myanmar five years.

“As the last Golden Land in the region, Myanmar offers good growth prospects and opportunities for us, and we do not want to miss the boat,’’ Liew told StarBiz.

He said this last Wednesday before the introduction of its new brand ambassador, celebrity Gadaffi Ismail Sabri or Dafi, and the launch of its “Great Malaysian Chicken” dish.

“The fast-food segment there is still largely untapped, with no international fast-food outlets except for a few local fast-food outlets,’’ he noted.

Liew said that after Myanmar, Marrybrown would be venturing into southern Thailand next year, as that part of the country also showed good growth potential.

He said Marrybrown planned to set up 15 outlets in Southern Thailand in three years.

Liew said the company would also expand into Jordan and Turkey.

It intends to open 15 new outlets in Malaysia from June until December this year.

At present, there are 380 Marrybrown outlets in Malaysia, China, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Tanzania, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan.
