KUALA LUMPUR (July 24): Bursa Malaysia said today regulated short selling (RSS) is not open for retail investors.

“It is not a retail play. Only institutions can borrow scripts to short sell,” Bursa’s acting director of securities market Ong Li Lee told reporters today.

On July 22, the stock operator expanded short-selling counters to 171, after having capped the number at 100 since it re-introduced RSS transactions in 2007.

“There has been no change at all” in terms of RSS regulations after the 100 stocks-cap was lifted, Ong said.

She brushed off remarks that RSS is overregulated by saying the mechanism is in place to “offer an orderly and fair market,” and Bursa is no difference than other stock exchange counterparts elsewhere.

The stock exchange said it is putting up RSS transactions on its website on a daily basis to allow retail investors to understand the product better.
